The UCLA Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences invites applications for a position in the Academic Adminstrator Series to serve as Project Manager for the Mainzer Research Group at UCLA. Prof. Mainzer is the Principal Investigator (PI) of NASA’s Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor mission.

Duties:

Oversee procurement of the large-format (2K x 2K) infrared detectors, including focal planes and associated control electronics, produced by Teledyne Imaging Sensors in Camarillo, CA for the two infrared channels of NEO Surveyor instrument. Oversee integration of the focal planes into the Observatory. Manage technical and programmatic Teledyne subcontracts for these state-of-the-art detectors, including ensuring that schedule and cost objectives are met. Support design, development, integration, and test of cables associated with the focal planes. Manage testing of additional non-flight devices at UCLA to ensure that science requirements can be met and may assist the NEO Surveyor Principal Investigator (PI) and her team with analysis of the test data. Contract technical management of other procurements involving infrared detectors that support the PI’s research projects. Manage all other subcontracts associated with the NEO Surveyor mission at UCLA, including science team members and other institutional partners. Assist the NEO Surveyor PI in managing the science team and the mission’s education and public outreach efforts.

The incumbent will supervise a team of nine research and administrative staff. Supervisory duties will include working with the PI on hiring, compensation, discipline, and dismissal.

Summary
Reporting to the Principal Investigator of the NEO mission, the academic administrator will manage procurement and will support all other areas of operations.

Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications for the position are a Ph.D. in physics, planetary science, astronomy, electrical engineering, or the equivalent with at least 20 years of experience in design, development, and test of infrared detector arrays, electro-optical systems, and management of complex technical and scientific programs is required. Experience with design and layout of printed circuit boards and mechanical and electrical design of cryogenic cables is required.
