Position Details: Loyola University Maryland invites applications for an affiliate teaching position for BL155 Foundations of Biology 3 Lab in Spring 2024 (1/16/24 – 5/9/24). The course meets on Tuesdays from 1:40-5:30 PM. About the course: BL155 is the third course in the introductory sequence for biology majors. It is a 2-credit lab course that is taken concurrently with a 3-credit lecture course. Course description: An examination of the processes which produce the diversity of organisms on our planet. Topics include the biotic and abiotic factors which determine the distribution and abundance of species and evolutionary processes which lead to adaptation, speciation, and extinction. Also examines conservation of the diversity of life by studying the interaction between humans and other organisms. This is an intermediate lab course in which students conduct a long-term research project that requires: responsible use of living materials, revision and adaptation, expression and interpretation of data in graphs and tables, the completion of scientific calculations and statistics, and communication of results. Students also engage in computational analysis, modeling, and simulation of complex processes, discuss current topics in biology using evidence-based arguments, and explore sub-fields and career options in biology. PhD or equivalent degree preferred. PhD candidates may be considered if they have extensive prior teaching experience. Scientific expertise that matches course content; strong interest in teaching undergraduates; willingness to respond to feedback and work collaboratively with multiple instructors. The search committee is particularly interested in candidates who have an interest and/or demonstrated skills in high impact teaching practices.
