POSITION PURPOSE

Assist the Head Coach with all aspects of the Men’s Soccer Program. This position is a 0.24 FTE that works 500 annual hours.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

Assist with all aspects of the Soccer Program. Recruit qualified student-athletes for admission to a demanding academic environment. Provide leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes, including counseling team members in academic, disciplinary and personal matters. Observe all NCAA, conference and college rules and regulations. Teach the fundamental principles and techniques of a goalkeeper (i.e. competition, traditions and sportsmanship) as well as the philosophy of the sport. Positively and actively contribute to the College's core values of diversity, equity, inclusion and antiracism. Remain proactive in all matters pertaining to safety among staff and participants. Cooperate with all coaches and administrative staff within the athletics program to enhance overall department operation and student-athlete experience. Effectively interact with a wide variety of people in a manner that positively portrays the college and its programs, personnel, and philosophies. Analyze film. Assist in scouting opponents to develop scouting reports. Upload Film into Hudl. Analyze practice and matches to improve individual and team performance. Complete special projects and other duties as needed by the Head Coach.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Must be able to explain and/or demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to safely perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. Specifically,

Coaching

Ability to effectively teach and coach students in both an individual and team setting. Ability to attend all practices, matches, team events, camps, clinics. Ability to execute physical activities required to perform the essential functions of the position (shooting, passing, throwing, etc.).

Recruiting

Ability to recruit outstanding student-athletes to a strong academic environment. Ability to successfully articulate the values of a liberal arts education and the role intercollegiate athletics plays in the development of student athletes. Proficient in use of various social media platforms. Communicate with Whitman admissions on prospective student-athletes. Ability to attend matches and tournaments in the Pacific Northwest and around the country. 

Mentoring

Ability to provide individual academic and athletic feedback and guidance to student-athletes. Ability to provide a positive environment and be a positive role-model for student-athletes. 

Miscellaneous

Ability to coordinate transportation, lodging and meals with off campus travel.  Thorough knowledge of all applicable NCAA Division III and Conference rules as they apply to soccer. Ability to work independently as well as establish and maintain harmonious relations with other staff, faculty and students.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree.  Valid driver’s license with 3+ of experience, and ability to successfully pass a background check and motor vehicle report.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

College coaching experience. At least two years of successful soccer coaching experience. Desire to pursue a career in coaching or athletics at the high school or college level.
