The Knight Cancer Institute Associate Director of Basic Science (ADBS) brings a deep commitment to advancing discovery-based scientific research efforts already underway and will guide the development of innovative policies and programs to further discovery-based science across all four research programs and missions. Additional leadership expectations are defined below.

 

Goals and expectations [as defined by the NCI P30 Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG)]:

Fosters scientific interactions and joint initiatives among programmatic elements with other NCI-designated cancer centers and other external partners (Organizational Capabilities)Effectively supports quality Research Programs in achieving publications in top-tier journals, widely-cited publications, paradigm-changing hypotheses and scientific methods that move respective fields forward, movement of scientific findings through the translational pipeline, changes in public health policy, changes in standard of care for patients, research relevant to the catchment area, the use of clinical observations to inform basic science research, contributions to the education and training activities of the Center, and appropriately scaled future plans (Research Programs)Promotes transdisciplinary and/or translational collaborations between discovery-based science research groups. clinical, prevention, cancer control, and population science members (Transdisciplinary Collaboration & Coordination)Promote collaborations within and among Research Programs that provide value to cancer-related scientific activities within the Center (Transdisciplinary Collaboration & Coordination)Effectively move scientific findings forward to cancer-related endpoints appropriate to the nature of the research through internal collaborations, external collaborations with partners including other NCI-designated cancer centers, commercial development, and other mechanisms (Transdisciplinary Collaboration & Coordination)Ensures breadth, depth, and significance of the cancer-related research base, as evidenced by the structure and objectives of the Research Programs, peer-reviewed research support, collaborative publications, and other activities of members (Cancer Focus)Ensures a rigorous method is applied to determining cancer relevance of publications and non-NCI peer-reviewed funding (Cancer Focus)Ensures shared resources meet the needs of discovery-based scientific research and effectively champion accessibility, quality, training, and development of future resources to meet the Center's needs by working collaboratively with the AD of Shared Resources (Shared Resource Management)Contribute to establishing and implementing the vision for the KCI and advancing goals and policies relevant to the Center's progress (Leadership, Planning & Evaluation)

 

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Advises the Director, Deputy Directors and other KCI Senior Leaders on research impacting the fundamental mechanisms of cancer and their translationIn collaboration with the AD of Population Science and AD of Clinical Research, serves as senior leadership and mentor for all eight (8) research program leadersAttend Knight Director’s Advisory Council (DAC) meetings, Scientific Leadership Committee (SLC) meetings, retreats, and other key Knight meetings as appropriate for a senior cancer institute leader. Serve as subject matter resource on discovery-based science in the workplace for Knight Cancer Institute and with a seat at the table of the Knight Senior Leadership Team, this position will ensure the team is applying a basic science lens to decision-making activitiesRepresent the Knight Cancer Institute's discovery-based scientific research efforts when working with entities at OHSU, including employee resource groups, OHSU Research and Innovation led by the OHSU Vice President for Research, and other leaders across OHSU, as assignedWork with the Director, Co-Deputy Directors, and other Knight leaders to recruit key faculty members and research staff to OHSU and the Knight Cancer Institute. Provides guidance and advice, and participates in setting priorities regarding discovery-based scientific research recruitment opportunities. Participates on search committees, interviews candidates, reviews curriculum vitae, and provides recommendationsReviews and provides recommendations on basic and translational funding applications and encourages the development of multidisciplinary grants across programsRepresent or delegate representation of the Knight Cancer Institute at various OHSU meetings and in external settings as assigned by the Director, Deputy Directors, and within the Associate Director's available capacity. Participates in fundraising activities, as assignedServe as an expert on NCI P30 CCSG Guidelines, as well as institutional policies as they pertain to basic science and research programsProvides input for CCSG progress reports in non-competing years, mainly for the research program sections and other sections as appropriate. Every five years actively engages in the preparations for the P30 CCSG competitive renewal written application and participates in oral and/or poster presentations, as needed. Participates in national conferences and working groups related to NCI designation as appropriatePromotes professional conduct and behavior of the highest integrity, exhibiting utmost respect for all members of the OHSU, scientific and catchment area communities; demonstrates consistency of action and purpose with unquestionable forthrightness Required Qualifications PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree, Associate Level professorship or higher and board-certified (as appropriate) in their related field;Ten or more years of experience as an independent principal investigator with a track record in discovery-based scientific research that demonstrates scholarship, leadership, and an ability to obtain external, peer-reviewed cancer-related research funding;Successful experience in a multidisciplinary setting;Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills; and,Demonstrated experience in multi/trans-disciplinary program development in an academic medical center.
