DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

With approximately 100,300 ED visits annually, the CHA Emergency Departments are fast-paced, constantly changing environments with rapid patient turnover.

Summary:
Behavioral Health Clinicians within the Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) are vital members of a multidisciplinary treatment team. The behavioral health clinician works closely with nurses, physician assistants, and physicians in a fast-paced, high stress environment, and is under the clinical supervision of the psychiatrist. The behavioral health clinician completes psychiatric assessments, provides crisis counseling, and implements treatment planning for patients in the PES. The behavioral health clinician identifies appropriate resources and obtains collateral information, as needed, from patients’ supports including family members, friends and outpatient providers. The diversity of the client population served, in addition to the treatment modalities utilized, requires interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration.

The training responsibilities are assigned by the PES Manager in accordance with the training needs of the department.

Responsibilities:

In a site based integrated care team provides assessment, evaluation, treatment and or referral of patients with severe mental illnessWorks with specialists and generalists who encompass multiple skills, and cultural competencies.Offers treatment recommendations for specific diagnosis while educating the patient about illness and treatment options.Contributes as a member of team in discussions of diagnosis and treatment. Shares problems and considers issues of acuity and risk.Participates in the assignment of mental health and addictions care options.Shares and participates in the knowledge acquisition process of new initiatives, policies and practiceMaintains awareness of medical issues and/or problems of patients to ensure patients have preventative and secondary careCollaborates on cases through the sharing of assessments and framework of treatment empowering PCP group to improve interventionsCollaborates with a multidisciplinary team. Demonstrates a capacity to work collaboratively in a team setting, with an ability to listen to others, participate actively, and take appropriate responsibilityCollaborates with other caregivers, community agencies and family members as necessary to provide systemically informed, community-based treatment.Completes psychiatric assessments, treatment plans, termination notes, CANS assessments and other required paperwork thoroughly and on time.Provides all necessary documentation in clients’ medical charts in an effective and timely fashion.Participates in activities of the Cambridge Health Alliance Department of Psychiatry.Participates in teaching and training activities including continuing education activities needed to maintain yearly licensing requirements.Provides clinical supervision for behavioral health clinicians and interns as needed. May also provide clinical supervision for staff and trainees of other disciplines.Makes referrals to a variety of community agencies and assists patients/clients with applications and with follow-up as appropriate.Participates in the design and implementation of patient education and psycho-education programs for clients, families, and others as necessary.

Education/Training: Masters degree, Mental Health Counseling or related fieldLicensure: Current MA licensure as an LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Clinician), LCSW, or LICSWCertifications: Must be credentialed by the CHA Medical Staff for practice in relevant clinical areas.Previous Experience: Minimum of two years post Masters degree experience with acute psychiatric population required.Physical Skills: Successful completion of physical agility assessment.Mental Skills: Analytical, organizational, observational and documentation skills, including experience with electronic medical record documentation. Experience with insurance authorization process, and knowledge of behavioral health resources.
