Job Summary: \n

The Clinical Student Externship is a training program offered by CHS for students to experience clinical practices and realities of the clinical settings before graduation. The student provides direct care to patients and families under mentorship and supervision of a Registered Nurse.\n

The clinical student extern is a member of the patient care team who is enrolled in a clinical program. The clinical student extern will follow the schedule of their mentor and provide direct patient care to the patients assigned. This person supports activities of daily living (ADL's) with patients and prevents complications. Strong interpersonal and excellent communication skills are required as well as being able to interact with people from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds. Previous patient care experience is a plus. The clinical student extern will be assigned to a team member who will delegate appropriate tasks to the extern during the shift.\n

This position is offered for a four (4) month period. Near the end of the externship, an evaluation with the supervising manager will be completed and other prospective permanent employment opportunities will be explored. If a transfer to a different position is not desired, the externship will end at the four month mark.\n

Job Responsibilities:\n\nCommunicating in a clear and respectful fashion with both patients and teammates with every encounter. Representing CMC with the highest level of customer service. Acting as a resource for the interdisciplinary team.\nReporting abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions of the patient to the appropriate RN. Examples include changes in vital signs, ADL's, patient ambulation and\/or transfers, and daily weights.\nObtaining and reporting vital signs as scheduled and prn in a timely manner.\nMonitoring and recording intake and output of fluids and patient weights.\nAssisting patients with all aspects of personal care that competency is demonstrated in.\nAmbulating and repositioning patients as scheduled or prn to prevent the complications of immobility.\nReinforcing activities determined in the plan of care that have been delegated as responsible for and reporting reaction to the activity to NA or Nurse.\nAssisting patients with maintaining a clean and organized bedside area to ensure a safe workspace that is conducive to healing.\nWill participate in advanced clinical skills selected from competency list as training is accomplished.\nRemaining flexible in assisting both patients and teammates as assigned throughout the shift.\nIntentionally rounding on each patient every hour to ensure the above responsibilities are complete and patient needs are met.\n\n

Requirements: \n\nEducation: Enrolment in a clinical program.\nExperience: Clinical experience in applicable patient care program of study.\nLicensure: Not required\nCertification: Not required, record of BLS\/ACLS will be noted\nPhysical Requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., Use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time may be necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.\n\n
