Financial Aid Advisor (3 positions)
Location: Albany, NY Category: Professional Posted On: Mon Apr 4 2022 Job Description: Financial Aid Advisors in the Office of Financial Aid, support customer service (i.e. phones, lobby, chatbot and email) and the processing that is required for State or Federal Student Aid. The individuals are subject matter experts for all aspects of Financial Aid, compliance, Title IV funding and packaging. Advisors report to the Senior Associate Directors. The individuals in these positions are responsible for supporting and administering all aspects of student financial aid programs, services and will provide financial counseling to students. The individuals will also work with the Student Information Systems (PeopleSoft/Oracle), companion systems, which support the university with a focus on financial aid management, scholarships and verification (Document imaging, CampusLogic/StudentForms, Scholarship Manager, NSLDS, COD and other locally developed and commercial software tools etc.). The successful candidates must also possess a general understanding of financial aid and be able to think independently and make autonomous decisions. Primary Responsibilities + Administer, support and provide financial counseling on all aspects of financial aid. + Be the area expert for Financial Aid, leveraging ongoing improvement of practices through best utilization of PeopleSoft and other applications used for awarding, communicating and tracking Financial Aid. + Collaborates with other Financial Aid Advisors to facilitate cross-functional training and testing as necessary. + Develop expertise, provide support and understand all financial aid resources and application sources (e.g., HESC, NYSFAAA, NASFAA, COD, NSLDS, NSC, other pertinent Federal Student Aid sites). + Develop and continue to enhance understanding of IRS tax documents, federal regulations and compliance obligations. + Understand the collection and analysis related to financial aid documents submitted by students and parents to assist them in making changes and submitting the correct documents. + Works with Student Accounts, Bursar Staff to assist in collection of student payments, confirming awards, customer service and determining course of action needed for outstanding balance. + Facilitates communication with Assistant Directors/Senior Associate Directors of Financial Aid and other Student Financial Staff to ensure participation in ongoing needs and operational assessment. + Monitor State and Federal Financial Aid professional organizations and list-serves, and other related list-serves for any issues that may impact the Financial Aid Office, awarding of scholarships, compliance and business practices. + Assist at recruiting and other campus/external events such as Open House, High School FAFSA filing, SUNY Financial Aid Days and Orientation Events. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications + Bachelor's degree or equivalent. The degree must be from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. + At least one year professional experience administering Title IV and state aid. + Experience must include demonstration of attention to detail, strong communication skills and proficiency in use and management of one or more integrated business applications systems that support processes. + Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups + Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented and ability to multi-task and manage priorities. Competent with Microsoft Office applications. + The applicant must address in their application their ability to work with culturally diverse populations. Preferred Qualifications + Have experience working in a college, university, or University System environment with a responsible role in providing counseling or operational support for financial aid management; familiarity with verification, student loans, TAP, Excelsior, Pell, Federal Work Study and other forms of financial aid; + Have experience managing need based programs and packaging + Experience using student information systems including the use of query tool and equation engines; preference given if experience using PeopleSoft.
