Position Summary / Career Interest:The Mobile Phlebotomist drives from location to location during the shift when necessary.  The person in this position must be able to plan and ensure arriving at the predetermined location at a pre-set time for blood collection on Executive Health Program clients and other patients.  Most blood draws will be early morning for fasting labs, but potential exists for blood draws at different times throughout the day. This position will perform standardized and specialized phlebotomy procedures on patients of all ages in a safe, accurate and professional manner.  The Mobile Phlebotomist uses personal vehicle, displayed with a magnetic University of Kansas Health System sign, to travel to Health System locations, and/or a patient’s home or workplace to draw blood.

When not specifically performing mobile phlebotomy duties the Mobile Phlebotomist will be assigned to an ambulatory area and will collect blood samples, receive and process samples and assist with other pre-analytical tasks.

The Mobile Phlebotomist follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards, policies and procedures and participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities:Performs blood draws by venipuncture according to standard protocol, ensuring patient safety and quality specimen collection at multiple locations as requiredPerforms specimen collection using appropriate techniques and adhering to requirements. Provides patients and/or care providers with instructions and necessary materials for specimen collectionProvides immediate patient care if patient exhibits sign of a post-venipuncture reaction, typically vasovagalAssesses patient presentation and escorts patient to draw room with recliner if patient is an adolescent or young adult or states that they typically have a reaction to having their blood drawnPerforms data entry in applicable information systems in compliance with departmental and organizational policiesEnsures proper container type, centrifugation, and transport conditions for specimens. Able to determine appropriateness of specimens for add-on testingReleases orders on ambulatory health system patients with orders in HISReceives samples in LIS, prints barcode labels and affixes labels to specimens. Enters outside orders in LIS when copy of outside order is scanned into HISConsults Phlebotomy Coordinator, Supervisor or Lab Leadership when appropriate if situation requires assistance - Provides assistance to nursing staff when requestedPerforms specimen processing duties such as aliquoting urine and separating blood samples when required for testingUnderstands pre-analytical variables that can impact test results: Container Type, Time, Temperature, Centrifugation, labeling. Able to determine appropriateness of specimens for addon testingResponds to telephone inquiries and provides customer service to the end caller by addressing their needs and troubleshootingInstructs, orients and mentors students, employees, patients and other health care providers as applicableMaintains an adequate inventory of supplies

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Required:

-High School diploma or equivalent

Minimum of one year specimen collection and processing experience.

Read, write, speak and understand English

Must be able to communicate effectively in English

Valid driver’s license and clean driving record and must be able to maintain alertness while driving long distances.

Effective written and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of medical terminology related to blood collection.

Knowledge of safety practices.

Strong attention to detail.

Demonstrated skill with laboratory information systems

Preferred:

Phlebotomist ASCP or AMT certification

One year of phlebotomist experience at TUKHS

Speak and understand Spanish desirable
