COMPENSATION

Annual Minimum - Maximum$85,000.00 - $115,000.00

Forest Lawn 's Gardening department is seeking a Department Supervisor.

Under general direction, the Supervisor will oversee the care and maintenance of the Memorial Parks’ garden and special care areas in the Glendale Park.  This position will also be responsible to supervise activities of 19 full time employees, and seasonal employees.  In addition, they will carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees: planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Management retains the discretion to add or change the essential duties and requirements at any time.

It is expected that this supervisor will keep abreast of innovations in the landscape maintenance field and apply new procedures and practices whenever they will improve park appearance or efficiency of park maintenance operations.

Assist Architecture and Engineering in the development of new gardens and provide input regarding the development of new garden landscapes.

Will work with staff Horticulturist to maintain gardens and special care areas to established Forest Lawn standards of appearance.

Will initiate renovations and/or landscape replacements as needed.

Prepare designated areas for special events and programs and become familiar with the resource requirements for such events.

Maintain high morale of workgroup through training, team building, incentives, etc.

Oversee the application of pesticides and other chemicals to the landscape.

Conduct safety meetings and insure equipment is in safe operating condition.

Meet with client families whenever complaints or problems arise.

Update and maintain department MSDS records.

Assist Park Vice President in establishing annual budgetary estimates.

Submit annual capital equipment needs estimates.

Supervise the installation of lot markers and final property developments.

Approve departmental releases for pre-need and at-need property.

Maintain adequate inventory of all equipment and supplies, required for proper garden maintenance.

Provide training to all employees under their supervision and allow for growth and development of personnel.

Conduct regular staff meetings.

Conduct bi-monthly safety training meetings

Conduct bi-annual performance reviews with each employee.

Perform other duties as needed or required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bilingual English/Spanish.

Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field (This can be substituted for with two year certificate programs and grounds/landscape experience)

Minimum of two years supervisory experience in grounds maintenance

California Qualified Applicator’s Certificate

ISA Arborist Certification

Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Possess the ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 

Must be able to effectively speak before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Valid California Driver’s License

DRUG TESTING POLICY

The drug screening method is a hair collection test that will detect the use of illegal drugs within the past 90 days. A positive drug test may result in the withdrawal of the job offer.
