Guthrie/Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES LPN Program - Starts August 2024!
Guthrie is excited to announce that we have partnered with Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES in Auburn, NY to sponsor tuition for select students in the year-long LPN program. Limited sponsored spaces will be available for the August 2024 class, and we are currently accepting applications. Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES in Auburn, NY and not in Cortland. (clinical locations are determined by BOCES and are normally held at areas around the school) Schedule: The Practical Nursing program is offered once a year and classes are scheduled from August to July. Students participate in classroom and clinical experiences Tuesday through Friday. Days/Times: Last Week in August Through Mid-October Schedule - Tuesday through Friday, Theory Days: 8 am - 3:30 pm Mid-October through July Schedule - Clinical Days: 7:00 am - 2:30 pm, Theory Days: 8:00 am - 3:30 pm Requirements of the program: + Must be 17 years or older + A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required (if you are a current high school student you must have your diploma by the time the program begins). + All applicants must apply to the program on the Guthrie website as well as successfully complete the interview process. + You must successfully complete and obtain an acceptable score on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Exam. + Completion of all BOCES prerequisites and additional requirements is mandatory. + You must work in a per-diem capacity of a Patient Care Partner (Acute Care Department and Telemetry Department) or Patient Care Technician (Emergency Department) at Guthrie Cortland Medical Center (12 hours per bi-weekly pay period) while going to school. + You will be hired as a full time LPN at GCMC once you have graduated & licensed and are expected to commit to working for GCMC as a full time LPN for 3 years after becoming a LPN. + If you drop out of the program or are not successful in completing the program you may be subject to repaying money on a prorated basis + Our Acute Care LPNs will most likely be placed in one of the following departments: Emergency Department, Telemetry Department and the Acute Care Department. The shifts for LPNs are 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM or 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM. General Information: + Guthrie will pay the full tuition for the program and the fee for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) Exam, which is the exam that is needed to enter into the nursing program. Guthrie does not cover the cost of books and anything needed/fees associated with doing clinicals. + The hourly rate for the Patient Care Technician position is based on experience so please be sure to either include a resume when applying or to completely fill out your current/previous work experience so the Compensation Team can give you the most credit. Will also interview patient to obtain history allergies, reconciles medication list and records on chart as requested. + Write or call Rx after obtaining surgeon/provider authorization for all department surgeons/providers as needed. Chart as written in patient's chart + Email, fax or call in any insurance referrals. Follow up phone call with referral number to specialist if requested. + Assists in smooth departmental operation by filling in for other LPNs, clinical assistant and MOA's as requested. Answers telephone and performs other clerical functions as necessary (screen calls according to urgency and need). Must train and maintain proficiency in the use of computer equipment and other computer program training as requested. Must train and maintain proficiency in the use of computer equipment and other computer program training as requested + Attends to exam and procedure rooms, including assurance that proper supplies are on hand, maintain order and cleanliness. Order medications or clinical supplies for the department as requested. + Administers prescribed injections/medications and records them on patient's chart + Routes patient after exam to proper area for ancillary testing or follow-up appointments, i.e. Blood work, x-rays, and enter lab testing as requested. + Basic knowledge of medications (side effects/contraindications, etc.) + Be able to read and review pathology results with patients + Setup and tear down sterile fields + Basic knowledge of surgical instruments + Prepare surgical trays as needed for procedures for the day. + Assist surgeon with operative procedures both in the office and Operating Room if necessary + Maintain infection control measures including but not limited to proper cleaning of surgical equipment and use of autoclave + Proficient with autoclave sterilization process + Knowledge and proficiency of dressing changes and suture removal + Assess signs and symptoms of infection and reporting to surgeon and/or provider + Hepatitis checks and protocol to protect surgeon, patient, and nurse Other Duties + As assigned as appropriate for LPN licensure + Attend new employee orientation and all mandatory events such as in-services, classes, training as required by the organization + Complies with the dress code policy as set forth by Guthrie + Attends and participates in Department meetings, along with contributing to department/office goals The pay range for this position is $24.50 - $38.23 per hour and is based on experience.
