Summary: Prepares tissue for microscopic review; stains slides with special stains, including immunohistochemistry; maintains laboratory equipment and completes appropriate quality control records; maintains the laboratory in a clean fashion; performs routine histology tasks including paraffin specimen embedding, sectioning and staining (routine, tinctorial and immunohistochemistry); prepares surgical frozen sections as well as Moh’s sections; performs gross dissection limited to biopsies and uncomplicated surgical specimens; accessions and processes surgical and biopsy specimens; performs simple and complex laboratory test procedures in a timely manner as assigned; performs related laboratory technology duties; performs specialized tasks including special immunohistochemistry Ab evaluation and assisting MD faculty and fellows during post mortem autopsies.

Salary range for this position is $69,148 - $84,577 annually which includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Qualifications:Required Education and Experience

License Requirement
1. License to practice as a Certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York; or
2. Eligibility for licensure as a Certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York.

Education and Experience
1. Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time Histology experience including the performance of immunohistochemistry, frozen section or grossing biopsy/surgical specimens; or
2. Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and completion of a Histological Technician Certificate program recognized by New York State for licensure exam eligibility and the equivalent of two (2) years of full-time Histology experience including the performance of immunohistochemistry, frozen section or grossing biopsy/surgical specimens; or
3. Associate’s degree and the equivalent of four (4) years of full-time experience as a Histotechnologist II at Roswell Park;.

NOTE:
1. Required degrees must have been granted by an accredited school, college or university or one recognized by Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center as following acceptable educational practices.

Primary Duties:

Performs all duties of a Histotechnologist II.

Performs gross dissection limited to biopsy and uncomplicated surgical specimens.

Performs frozen specimen sectioning in the surgical frozen section suite.

Performs Moh’s specimen section and specialized staining in the Moh’s Dermatology suite.

Accessions biopsy and surgical specimens into the Laboratory Information system inclusive of document scanning as required.

Retrieves tissue from gross room after it has been cut; loads and starts tissue processor; unloads and flushes tissue processors; records number of blocks processed; embeds tissues into paraffin blocks; cuts blocks using microtome to make slides; stains slides manually or on automated stainer.

Cuts slides from paraffin blocks; stains slides using special procedures depending upon request from staff.

Accessions and processes surgical and biopsy specimens, including but not limited to handling surgical specimens and by-products in accordance with procedures and applicable safety guidelines.

Gathers appropriate data for reports, compiles quality control logs and counts and reports results to supervisor.

Performs and documents equipment maintenance, including reagent changes, cleaning and troubleshooting.

Cleans glassware.

Inventories and stocks supplies.

Files/stores case material, blocks, and slides in a traceable manner.

Assists in the training and education of employees/students to explain and demonstrate testing procedures and standard operating procedures.

Provides input in the preparation, validation and implementation of new standard operating procedures.

Maintains a safe and well-stocked work environment.

Assists with the coordination of each autopsy performed, interacting with nursing, medical records and clinical staff; ensures retrieval of patient medical records and valid consent form.

Assists fellows, residents and MD faculty during autopsies.

Coordinates the photography of autopsy and surgical cases.

Documents the intake/release of deceased patients in the morgue service in accordance with established procedure.

Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards.

Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, and participating in in-service meetings and workshops.

Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.

Attends meetings as required.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Other Descriptive Elements:

The Histotechnologist III typically reports to the Supervising Clinical Laboratory Technologist (Histology and Pathology Services). The incumbent has limited authority to make decisions or commitments directly related to the performance in this role. Authority to make decisions or commitments within the limits of organization policies and procedures that are clearly specified. Decisions are varied and based on well-defined guidelines and practices.

Relationship with Others:

The Histotechnologist III has contact within the department and some routine contact outside the department. The incumbent also has day-to-day contact with customers, vendors or sales representatives.

Functional Responsibilities:

Working knowledge of the instruments, materials and techniques of preserving, embedding, sectioning, mounting and staining specimens for microscopic examination and analysis.

Working knowledge of histology principles, practices and procedures.

Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.

Ability to prioritize tests to be performed in emergency situations.

Working knowledge of instrumentation/procedures.

Ability to perform preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

Ability to observe variations in color to verify the quality of staining processes to ensure that essential feature of tissue sections can be properly defined.

Ability to accurately record observations.

Ability to pay close attention to detail for long periods of time.

Working knowledge of the Anatomic Pathology LIS System.

Ability to maintain competency in immunohistochemistry and either frozen section preparation or grossing of biopsy specimens.

Knowledge of anatomy and surgical pathology.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the Histotechnologist III is frequently required to use hands or fingers to manipulate, touch or handle, reach with hands or arms and talk or hear. The incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk and sit. They are occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The incumbent is frequently required to lift twenty (20) pounds, regularly required to lift fifty (50) pounds and occasionally required to lift seventy-five (75) pounds. They are frequently required to push/pull ten (10) pounds, regularly required to push/pull fifty (50) pounds and occasionally required to push/pull one hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.
