The Getty Research Institute (GRI) is seeking a limited-term Library Assistant II to facilitate description and access to the GRI’s unique materials. The focus of this position will be to enhance description of the Photo Archive, a collection of over 2 million documentary photographs of western art from antiquity through the early twentieth century, organized by chronology, medium and culture. This is a one-year limited-term position.
Reporting to the Special Collections Archivist III who will oversee the project, the Library Assistant II will concentrate on increasing discovery of material by adding folder-level description to existing box-level finding aids for the various sections of the Photo Archive. They will also work on basic maintenance tasks, such as replacing loose box labels, placing fragile or damaged photographs in Mylar sleeves and creating circulation records.
Major Job Responsibilities Physically processes and organizes collections according to established procedures to ensure proper handling, care, storage, preservation and trackingAssists in creating, editing and enhancing metadataContributes to the development of a DACS-compliant finding aid and bibliographic record for collections based on current standards, best practices, research and evaluationLearns and uses various library software applications to execute routine transactions, such as track materials, inventory, and manage library collections and activitiesMay prepare, organize, and/or sort materials and/or data for others to work withMay track locations and circulation status in library systems, create and update item records, holdings records, and unique identifiersMay perform routine collection maintenance and rehousingParticipates in additional projects as assigned Qualifications Undergraduate coursework in art history or related discipline preferredMinimum 2 years related experience Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong communication skillsStrong organizational skills and attention to detailAbility to learn library-specific software applicationsAbility to lift boxes up to 40 pounds and push book trucksExperience with industry-standard software suites as appropriate to assigned dutiesAbility to handle rare and unique materials with careIntroductory knowledge of bibliographic metadata structure and guidelinesAbility to work in partnership with othersAbility to climb ladders Benefits and PerksHere are just some examples that Getty offers/provides for full-time employees:
