Essential Functions
+ Maintain and promote a positive and safe swimming environment, including communicating and enforcing facility rules to all patrons utilizing the pool, pool area, and play features to prevent accidents.
+ Observe behavior of pool patrons to maintain order and safety.
+ Perform rescues of swimmers in danger; supervise crowd control.
+ Administer first aid, CPR, and AED.
+ Provide leadership and positive communications with patrons.
+ Maintain and inspect all lifesaving equipment and facilities for cleanliness and safety.
+ Clean locker rooms, pool decks, bathrooms, and lobby areas.
+ Other duties as assigned, based on training and qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
+ Knowledge of waterpark and pool facility safety procedures, policies, and practices with the ability to instruct on water safety and enforce rules firmly with tact.
+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of facilitating swim lessons, including program planning and development, staff management, training, risk mitigation, etc.
+ Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, pool water chemistry and water quality procedures and regulations.
+ Knowledge of, and ability to promote, department safety considerations, City safety policies, OSHA standards and guidelines, and the Americans for Disabilities Act.
+ Skill in following oral and written instructions.
+ Skill in multitasking in a fast-paced environment, while providing effective customer service.
+ Skill in communicating, in person and writing, with the proven ability to establish and maintain positive effective working relationships with diverse individuals.
+ Ability to effectively break instructions down to specific skills and techniques with patience and tact.
+ Ability to lead and train staff and/or volunteers in a various job-specific areas.
+ Ability to stay alert and identify potential and/or actual emergency situations.
+ Ability to learn job specific software and equipment.
+ Ability to lead and work with both adults and youth of all ages.
+ Ability to participate in a customer focused and team-oriented environment, contributing as lead and collaborator, when necessary.
+ Ability to maintain and exhibit integrity and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
+ Ability to maintain and foster a culture of professionalism, adhere to departmental and City standards and specifications, and support a positive team environment.
+ Ability to resolve conflicts with facilitating outcomes while maintaining a calm demeanor.
+ Ability to learn departmental and City of Missoula practices and procedures.
Working Conditions:
+ Positions require the ability to lift 50 lbs.
+ Duties are frequently performed under conditions where noise, heat, dampness or cold are unavoidable.
+ Work environment may involve occasional exposure to occupational hazards, biohazards, and physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
+ Duties may require driving City vehicles to transport youth of all ages to various recreational sites and facilities.
+ Positions require schedule flexibility to accommodate opening, closing, and/or weekend shifts.
Qualifications and Additional Application Materials

+ Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position.
+ Must have an American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, a similar certification from a nationally recognized program, or the ability to obtain within two (2) weeks of hire through the P&R sponsored certification program.
+ Must be able to pass a fingerprint background check.

Are you currently American Red Cross Lifeguard certified? If no, are you able to attend training May 19-23 or May 27-31?

American Red Cross requires all lifeguards to be at least age 15 by the end of the lifeguard course, able to swim 150 yards, tread, then swim 50 yards non-stop, and be able to perform a timed event to retrieve a 10 lb brick from 8.5 feet of water. Are you able to meet these requirements?
