General Summary

As a locksmith, you will be responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining locks, keys, safes, and other security devices in the hospital premises, such as doors, cabinets, drawers, etc. using hand and power tools. You will also work with electronic access control systems, such as card readers, keypads, and biometrics. You will need to read and follow codes, standards, and regulations, cut and duplicate keys, program and reprogram electronic locks, and respond to emergency lockout situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Examines locking mechanism and installs new unit or disassembles unit and replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts or repairs them by filing, drilling, chiseling and grinding. Opens door locks by moving lock pick in cylinder or opens safe locks by listening to lock sounds or by drilling. Changes combination by inserting new or repaired tumblers into lock. Cut new or duplicate keys using impressions or code key machines. Disassemble mechanical or electrical locking devices, and repair or replace worn tumblers, springs, and other parts, using hand tools. Keep records of locks and keys. Establishes and maintains master key systems for buildings. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills and Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent Valid locksmith license Minimum 3 years of experience as a locksmith in a commercial or institutional setting Knowledge of locksmith techniques, tools, materials, and codes Ability to read and follow codes, standards, and regulations Ability to install, repair and maintain various types of locks and security devices Ability to work with electronic access control systems Ability to cut and duplicate keys, program and reprogram electronic locks Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to lift and carry heavy objects Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines Ability to communicate effectively with staff, contractors, and vendors

Work Environment

Occasional and/or light lifting required--limited exposure to elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc., but none to the point of being disagreeable. May involve minor safety hazards where likely result would be cuts, bruises, etc.
