As part of the department of Psychiatry, the MGH Ketamine Clinic is among a handful of clinics nationwide that provide accessible esketamine (nasal spray) and IV ketamine for treatment resistant depression.  The Ketamine Clinic is expanding to a newly renovated space with access to 40 treatment hours per week to help support the ongoing and increasing demand for both esketamine and IV ketamine treatment.

Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Manager (CNM), the Medical Assistant works in the clinical setting providing direct and indirect service for patients and providers. The medical assistant works with the interdisciplinary health team in providing a wide variety of clinical, administrative and technical support functions in the delivery of healthcare in the Ketamine Clinic. The Medical Assistant for the Ketamine Clinic will also be cross-trained to perform the administrative responsibilities of the Patient Service Coordinator II.

Medical Assistant\: Principle Duties and Responsibilities - Clinical

1.      Provides safe, compassionate patient care under the supervision of the Clinical Nurse Manager and licensed personal (RNs) working with the MA on a daily basis

1.      Performs all duties and responsibilities as described in the Medical Assistant  

position description

2.      Facilitates flow of patients from waiting room to infusion chairs in a timely manner as close as possible to scheduled appointment times

2.      Observes, reports and records vital signs, height and weight, pain level, and allergies as directed by the provider

1.      Obtains vital signs, height and weight, pain level and allergies. Documents results in the patient’s record (LMR).

2.      Monitors vital signs on patient receiving ketamine administration as per protocol.

3.      Promptly informs the MD, anesthesiologist, or staff nurse of any significant change in vital signs or acute symptoms

4.      Conducts a brief focused assessment of the patient, including interval changes

3.      Performs a variety of complex patient treatments and procedures according to standard policies and procedures, these may include but are not limited to\:

1.      Blood pressure cuff, pulse oximetry probe placement and 02 saturation measurement

2.      Provides snack, blankets, ice packs, comfort items

3.      Help with discharge procedures, linen change

4.      Helps coordinate change in infusion schedule with MD and administrative assistant

5.      Prepares forms for informed consent

 

4.      Physically prepares patients for and assists care providers with examinations and therapeutic procedures   

1.      Instructs and assists patients while getting infusions

2.      Instructs patients and families for expectations in the clinic

5.      Participates in daily operational activities necessary for a safe patient and staff environment. Maintains Joint Commission standards on the unit

1.      Cares for medical equipment and supplies and monitors sterilization of appropriate equipment.

6.      Ensures patient safety

1.      Escorts patients from waiting area to and from treatment areas

2.      Rounds on patients routinely for to assist with falls prevention

3.      Aids patients with toileting (including escorting patients to and from bathroom to prevent patient falls)

4.      Assists with patient transfers (i.e. wheelchair to/from bed/stretcher; stretcher to/from bed) and bed positioning

5.      Provides nutritional snacks for patients as appropriate

7.      Collaborates with CNM to identify and meet learning needs

       1. Attends educational programs to advance knowledge and skill

       2. Adheres to the standards of required training

 

Patient Services Coordinator II\: Principal Duties and Responsibilities - Administrative

Cross trained to provide back up for all check in and checkout functions as outlined by the MGH/MGPO Front Desk Standards and Cadence Front Desk Check In User without Registration Training Track.

Administrative tasks as assigned

2.      Maintains confidentiality and privacy which is consistent with HIPAA guidelines.

3.       Provides basic information/instructions to patients regarding Hospital and practice procedures. Will arrange escort or interpreter services as needed.

4.      Is competent in the use of automated systems used on the unit.

1.      Basic understanding of Ambulatory Patient Tracking System.

2.      Knowledge of Voalte communicating system

3.      Competence in scheduling patient appointments via Epic Hyperspace

4.      Prints upcoming schedules for patient verification and confirmation.

5.      Performs the daily management of encounter form processing and reconcilement.

1.      Knowledge of scanning procedures and label printing.

2.      Ensures completeness of all encounter forms by the patient as required for processing

6.      Remains current on any changing issues within the unit which affects initial patient flow

Qualifications

Education\:

High School diploma or equivalent; Completion of a Medical Assistant program or equivalent and current/working towards certification as a Medical Assistant.

Skills/Ability\:

Basic literacy skills required for adequate performance of job responsibilities

Successful completions of EKG training, glucometry and guiac testing

Computer training, PCIS

CPR certified
