Pleasanton Veterinary Hospital is a General Practice Small Animal clinic that provides medical care for the East Bay community and is seeking a Managing Veterinarian to serve as a leader for this practice. This is an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to transition into a new leadership position supported by the resources and guidance of a larger company. About us:

This location is a full service, progressive veterinary practice that provides affordable care in the community. As a leader of the practice and DVM, you will have access to all the tools needed to care for the pets that come through our doors. Equipment like digital radiology, ultrasound, full in-house laboratory, anesthesia monitoring equipment and access to boarded orthopedic surgical services and radiology will be at your disposal. Potential to serve exotic animals if desired.

Our compensation package includes a competitive base salary plus production, ranging anywhere from $175,000 to $250,000+, management bonuses and sign on bonuses! We also offer 401k, AVMA dues, CE allowance, paid holidays and vacations.


Job Summary

The Managing Veterinarian is responsible for providing medical leadership for the hospital, managing Associate Veterinarians, and assuring regulatory compliance relating to the practice of veterinary medicine. The Managing Veterinarian is also responsible for creating an environment of teamwork in which quality medicine and exceptional client service are delivered. 

In partnership with the Hospital Manager, the Managing Veterinarian is responsible for the financial performance and general operations of the hospital under the guidance of Divisional Leadership. In addition, the Hospital Manager and Managing Veterinarian are responsible for cultivating a supportive and collaborative team environment.


Duties and Responsibilities

Advancing Medical Care

Oversees surgical and medical cases for all doctors, ensuring positive outcomes, accurate estimates, and client communication and educationAnswers client questions and concerns regarding medical and surgical proceduresProvides oversight and direction of medical standards, quality of care and inventoryEstablishes medical protocolsOversees transfer of medical cases from doctor to doctorMinimizes waste and controls costs relating to medical supplies, surgical instruments, and drug inventories

Leading Staff and Practice

Participates in the recruiting and interviewing process for doctors, and when appropriate general staff membersMonitors doctor performance and productionDevelops and monitors hospital-specific client compliance protocols and proceduresParticipates in technician appraisal and medical counseling sessionsEnsures all medical staff receive applicable training, including the mentoring of new graduatesSupports the Hospital Manager with staff training programs and tracking CE and DVM/VMD licensure

Financial Responsibilities

Drives revenue and hospital contribution growth, which includes managing all hospital expensesAssists in the preparation of an annual planning strategy, operating budget and capital budgetMonitors key financial reports

Growing the Practice

Drives patient visits and encourages community involvementEmbraces change and supports innovative programs within the hospitalMonitors client service, marketing, and NVA growth initiativesSeeks out ways to innovate operational practices that improve the growth of the practice


Skills and Basic Qualifications

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) degree, or equivalent, from an accredited universityLicensure in good standing to practice in the state in which applicant is to be employedCommitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine and upholding the veterinary code of ethicsDemonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skillsDelegates tasks and achieves results with hospital team membersMakes decisions confidently and effectivelyLeads employees by coaching, correcting, developing, and motivating them to achieve successManages time and tasks appropriatelyModels a professional and courteous manner with staff and clients
