The Getty Research Institute’s (GRI) Special Collections Department seeks a full-time Metadata Assistant III to assist in the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of descriptive and technical metadata.  The Research Institute is in the process of reevaluating a variety of its metadata workflows and practices to provide more consistent, usable, and repurposable metadata to the arts and research communities it serves.  Reporting to the Head, Special Collections Management, the position will work both under little to no supervision, and in partnership with current staff, to carry out data clean-up and data enhancement projects, assist with metadata creation and file management for both born-digital materials and digitization projects, and participate in the development of new projects, such as the future incorporation of alt-text and closed-captioning.  The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment of shifting priorities and deadlines, working in partnership effectively with internal staff, Getty Digital, and other departments across the GRI and Getty community.  

Located at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, the Getty Research Institute is dedicated to furthering knowledge and advancing awareness of the visual arts and their histories. Serving an international community of scholars and the interested public, the Getty Library is one of the largest art and architecture libraries in the world, with holdings of more than 1.5 million volumes and digital resources. Special Collections include rare books and journals, rare photographs, prints, and drawings dating from the 15th century to the present, architectural drawings and models, art multiples, film, audio and video recordings, digital content, and extensive archives and manuscript collections.

Major Job Responsibilities Assists in complex metadata creation, selection, evaluation, capture, manipulation, remediation, and editing for collection access, description, and management Evaluates, maps, extracts and transforms existing cataloging and processing data into usable metadata for digitized materialsParticipates in working groups and/or project teams to develop solutions for improving workflows, productivity and the discoverability of metadata and digital assetsPerforms regular troubleshooting and quality control of metadata, filenames, and database functionality Works closely with staff across Special Collections, Curatorial, Reference, Getty Digital and other departments Applies knowledge of libraries and online records to assignments of complexity May assist in the creation and management of digital assets and their ingest into systems May process audio and video files created by Conservation staff and acquired from external vendors and creates derivatives as neededMay assist with and resolve complex problems for staff and library users. Refers more complex problems to higher level staff in the section May oversee and/or supervise the work of others Participates in additional projects as assigned Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline; some art history or library background preferred Minimum 3 years related experience Some supervisory and training experience preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong communication skills Tolerance for detail-oriented, high-volume, and, at times, repetitive workStrong organizational skills and ability to think critically and problem-solveExperience working with complex data (CSV)Familiarity with data exchange standards, such as XML and JSONFamiliarity with or ability to learn to manage batch data functions using OpenRefine, Python, XSL, APIs, and/or UNIX Command Line; ability to use PERL to run legacy scriptsExperience with or ability to learn software suites as appropriate to assigned duties, which may include oXygen, AirTable, Audacity, and Adobe Premiere Experience with or ability to learn library and archives-specific databases and software applications (may include digital asset management systems) as appropriate to assigned duties, which may include ArchivesSpace and ExLibris systems Awareness of linked data concepts and the semantic webBasic knowledge of existing and emerging metadata structures and standards, which may include Dublin Core, EAD, MARC21, BIBFRAMEAbility to apply job skills and departmental policies and procedures to complete a wide range of complex tasks in creative and effective waysAwareness of best practices in employing metadata standards to promote diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.Work is guided by supervisor, but can act under little to no supervision to select methods and procedures based upon expertiseAbility to work in partnership with others Benefits and Perks
