Neonatology Advanced Practice Provider
**Job Description** **Location:** Chicago, IL **Hospital:** RUSH University Medical Center **Department:** Pediatrics **Work Type:** Full Time (Total FTE between 0.9 and 1.0) **Shift:** Rotating **Work Schedule:** 12 Hr The **Department of Pediatrics** at **Rush University Medical Center,** a nationally recognized clinical and academic institution, and the teaching hospital for Rush Medical and Nursing Colleges, located in downtown Chicago, is seeking an experienced **Neonatal Nurse Practitioner** or **Physician Assistant** to join its Division of Neonatology. The Renée Schine Crown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a Level-3, 72 bed (single-roomed), state-of-the-art unit. We care for critically ill infants who are born at Rush and/or transferred in from network hospitals. Our patient mix ranges from extremely preterm infants to those with complex surgical needs. Our center has had consistent excellent outcomes in several major neonatal morbidities in very low birth weight infants within the Vermont Oxford Network. The Division partners with Obstetrics and Pediatric subspecialists to provide prenatal care and consultation through our multidisciplinary Fetal-Neonatal Center. Our productive NICU Human Milk research team at Rush conducts clinical and translational research in diverse areas: clinical, neurodevelopmental, and economic outcomes associated with mother’s own milk and donor milk, disparities in lactation, maternal, infant and milk microbiome, human milk science, and lactation physiology. The expectation for this role would be to care for a complex set of patients and work collaboratively with neonatologists, neonatal fellows, pediatric residents, and fellow Advanced Practice Providers. Responsibilities would include delivery room attendance and management, direct patient care, neonatal procedures, and neonatal transport. The schedule for this position rotates and is handled through self-scheduling within guidelines. The schedule includes 10-hour day shifts, 16-hour overnight shifts from 4pm – 8am, and 24-hour shifts (24-hour shifts are not required). ***APRN candidates for this position must be acute care certified** The **Advanced Practice Provider (APP)** is a licensed physician assistant (PA), or acute care certified advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) who functions as a member of the health care team to provide high quality, comprehensive acute and/or routine medical/surgical care of Rush University Medical Center patients within the scope of practice granted in accordance with the RUMC medical staff bylaws. The APP will promote collaboration between multiple disciplines to ensure cost effective and quality patient care. The individual who holds this position will exemplify the Rush mission, vision and values and act in accordance with the policies, procedures, guidelines of Rush, including the Rush University Medical Group Customer Service standards. Successful candidates will also meet all other state and federal regulatory practice and accreditation standards. Rush has over 400 APPs across the enterprise that provide comprehensive patient care each day autonomously and in collaboration with other members of the health care team. With the Director of Advanced Practice and 27 Lead APPs across the system, Rush's vision is to have every APP practicing at full scope and top of license. APPs at Rush are highly competent, well-respected members of the healthcare team that contribute to the excellent quality care that Rush patients receive each day. **Responsibilities:** 1. Completes and documents an accurate history and physical examination of patients. 2. Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments and develops patient care plans. 3. Orders and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within the scope of practice. 4. Prescribes medications, including controlled substances to the extent delegated including non-pharmacologic treatment modalities. 5. Orders, interprets, and performs laboratory and other diagnostic tests and procedures. 6. Provides clear, concise, and accurate information in the electronic medical record. 7. Initiate and perform consultations in accordance with Rush rules and regulations. 8. Make appropriate referrals to other health care professionals and/or agencies. 9. Provides direct patient care in assigned areas, which may be in a hospital or ambulatory setting. 10. Works collaboratively with his/her collaborating/supervising physician, department, and other members of the healthcare team in an effective and comprehensive manner. 11. Acts as an advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the physician assistant profession. 12. Participates in all required provider activities as outlined in the RUMC Medical Staff Bylaws. 13. Integrates evidence based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making. 14. Demonstrates competency in all medical and surgical procedures and skill considered essential in their area of practice. 15. Maintains board certification, state licensure, and continuing medical education as outlined by hospital, state, and federal policy. 16. Supports the organization's overall strategic plan and direction. 17. Serves as a leader of the healthcare team to provide integrated delivery of patient care services. 18. Actively participates in ongoing and systematic quality improvement efforts which focus on patient care delivery and supports processes that provide optimal patient outcomes. 19. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice and improvement. Including ongoing self-assessment of core competencies and yearly goals. Develops and leads implementation of department goals by collaborating with department staff, students, and physicians. 20. Serves as a role model and thought leader for their own profession including practice analysis and advancement to achieve optimal patient outcomes. 21. Manages resources effectively thereby considering the institution and practice's fiscal responsibilities. 22. Demonstrates an understanding of patient documentation, compliance, and billing best practices. 23. Provides relevant and comprehensive patient education to patients, families and significant others. 24. Fosters growth and development of students and other healthcare professionals. 25. Continuously assesses their personal capabilities and limitations, striving always to approve their medical practice. 26. Use their knowledge and expertise to contribute to an improved community. **Other information:** Required Job Qualifications: • Current State of Illinois Physician Assistant Licensure. • Current Certification from National Certification Commission for Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or other agency recognized by the American Academy of PAs (AAPA). • BLS certification. • Current State of Illinois Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Licensure. • Current Nurse Practitioner Certification from a national certifying organization Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner educational program. • The APN's education and specialty board certification must correlate with the APP's job role, setting, responsibility and patient population. • Master's or Doctorate degree in nursing. • Demonstrates competency in all areas of APP practice including: medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, patient care, professionalism, practice based learning and improvement, and systems based practice. • Skill in preparing and maintaining electronic and paper medical records • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues, and approaches in area of expertise. • Strong work ethic, interpersonal and communication skills. • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively with collaborating physician, department, and other members of the healthcare team in an effective and comprehensive manner. • APPs must also meet requirements as outlined in the general PA, APN, or APP job descriptions.
