Nexstar Media, Inc. America’s largest local broadcasting company, is seeking a driven and experienced news leader to serve as News Director for the New York City operation, which provides services to WPIX (CW) and PIX11.com through an operational agreement with Mission Broadcasting, in the #1 market in the country.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a team of award-winning journalists at a station providing almost 70 hours of local news and programming each week. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker who loves news, politics, sports and community. The News Director must be creative and innovative and embrace our multiplatform approach to delivering news and serving our viewers. The News Director will have the vision to lead a strong team of journalists with a focus on enterprise reporting, issue-based political coverage, and impactful news franchises.
Essential Duties:
Manages all aspects of the News Department (other than Production)Plans and manages staffing, training, and performance evaluations for the News DepartmentMakes decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employeesDevelops news coverage strategy for the station and its websiteCritiques newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staffAssigns projects to staff and verifies deadlines are being metEnsures achievement of digital and viewer rating goalsDetermines programming and evaluation of equipment needs to produce quality programmingResponds to coverage questionsWorks with other senior station leaders to establish and reach station goalsDevelop and implement a digital strategy to drive growth in online and streaming audiencesUtilize data and analytics to inform content decisions and measure the effectiveness of digital initiativesCollaborate with the team to create innovative, compelling stories that resonate with digital and streaming audiencesManage, coach, and inspire newsroom staff to achieve both editorial and digital growth goalsPerforms other duties as assignedRequirements & Skills:
Minimum 10 years’ experience in a broadcast television newsroom, with at least five years’ experience in a News Director role. Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experienceFluency in EnglishExcellent communication skills, both oral and writtenExperience guiding, directing and motivating subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performanceProven experience in a leadership role in a newsroom, with a strong understanding of digital content strategyExpertise in driving digital engagement, particularly through streaming services and online platformsStrong leadership and communication skillsAbility to thrive in a fast-paced, constantly evolving media environmentExperience establishing long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve themAbility to identify the developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge or skillsExperience preparing and maintaining departmental budgetsProficiency with computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, fax machines and other office equipmentAbility to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneouslyAbility to effectively listen to fully understand employee needs and communicate with a team to shape a solution#LI-On Site
Salary: $300k minimum
