Position Description

Registered Nurse who serves as the administrative representative for all hospital departments during weekends, evenings and night shifts. Responsible for resolving problems which affect any individuals within the hospital with access to department head, physicians and administrative staff as needed. Responsible for the continuity of high-quality standards of nursing care to all patients who may include newborns, children, adolescents and adults of all ages. Monitors personnel performance and maintains cost containment in the absence of the Nursing Managers. 

Education & Experience: 

•BSN required. •Evidence of continuing education beyond generic program with emphasis on management, critical care nursing and public relations. •Progressive nursing leadership roles required. •Three years' experience as an RN in acute care setting required. •Experience in a leadership position preferred.               

Certification/ Licensure:

•Current licensure in the State of New Jersey. •American Heart Association BLS.  •American Heart Association ACLS. •American Heart Association PALS preferred. •CPI initial for new hires within 60 days followed by annual de-escalation training provide by Inspira.   •Certification in area of specialty preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

•Ability to coordinate a variety of activities, establishing priorities for self and others. •Good judgement in handling problems in decision making and involving administrative and medical staff as needed.

Position Responsibilities

Administrative Practice:

•The Nursing Supervisor coordinates, supports and interprets the Inspira mission, goals and objectives, policies and procedures, and regulatory agency standards. •Recognizes potential or actual problems and documents in a timely manner with evidence of a solution and/or recommendations and informs appropriate administration. •Maintains positive interdepartmental relationships that promote problem solving cooperation and teamwork. •Participates regularly in administrative meetings and programs.                                                     

Resolution of Patient Care/Personnel Issues:

•Resolve patient/physician complaints. •Contacts department managers, administration as needed. •Resolves employee conflicts. •Report unresolved problems/issues to appropriate director. •Completes 24-hour management report and reports significant events to following shift supervisor.

The Nursing Supervisor performs as the administrative person on site during the 3-11/11-7 shifts as well as on weekends. Serves as nursing and patient advocate by acting as liaison with physician/family and other hospital departments. 

Responds to patient, families, physicians, and staff when problems are identified.

Ensures appropriate management of One to Ones/Close Observations/Restraint patients during shift in collaboration with Assistant Nurse Manager.

Delegate duties as appropriate.

Responds to and oversee all codes and trauma alert calls and provides appropriate staff.    

Oversees nursing office's staff contact with agencies regarding staffing needs and cancellations.

Coordinates patient bed placement by evaluating:

•staffing resources/competency •patient acuity •isolation requirements •gender •other requirements

Collaborates with physician in identifying special equipment; contacting on-call teams; patient competency and AMA issues.

Documents add on surgical cases.

Evaluates issues and reports to appropriate department heads/designee (Risk Management/Infection Control issues/Social Services/Bio-ethics Committee/Engineering/Security) for necessary action.

Functions as the initial incident commander; contacts administrator in event of potential/actual disaster; initiates appropriate emergency plan.

Participates in readiness of staff for regulatory surveys.

Notifies Public Relations of news media inquiries.

Gathers information for Public Relations as needed.

Assures adequate equipment/supplies are available.

Sees that Ambulance arrangements are made and provides appropriate staff members for emergency transports.

Arranges for borrowing or loaning hospital equipment, and documents on 24-hour report and Property Pass.

May delegate Property Pass to Security.

Provides emergency Pharmacy, IV therapy, Admissions, Dietary services in the absence of department personnel.

Assesses equipment failures, notifies Maintenance/Bio-med on -call and assists in evaluating need for Maintenance to come in.

Provides for adequate staffing of units to meet customer needs/expectations in a cost-effective manner.

Makes walking rounds several times during tour of duty to ascertain changes in census, then adjusts staffing appropriately.

Modifies skill mix and numbers to support unit acuity.

Assigns staff to preserve continuities of patient care when possible.

Utilizes patient classification system and staffing guidelines to justify staffing.

Maintains staff schedules and records changes.

Approves overtime if needed and justifies in writing.

Calls in additional staff when needed.

Staff Evaluation, Development and Discipline.

•Promotes development of nursing staff. •Uses good human relations techniques and communication skills in directing and counseling the nursing staff. •Recognizes positive performance and documents it on a timely basis. •Provides disciplinary actions and documents counseling, in a timely manner. •Prepares individual performance appraisals of float and personnel of her shift. •Meets with orientees on shift to monitor their progress and address any concerns. •Communicates current issues to staff on shift. •Presents mini-in-services. •Monitors credentials and participates in evaluation of per diem and agency nurses as needed. •Identifies educational needs and communicates to staff development coordinator. •Acts as a resource person in assisting the nursing staff or physician with procedures/processes/delineation of privileges/patient safety and quality issues.

Maintains death registry and participates in release of deceased to mortician.

•Family death notification and documentation if physician unable to contact family.

Participates in selected employee health activities:

•Substance abuse testing. •Exposure incident and process. •Work-related injury referrals.

Notification of organ donation for all deaths.  Coordinates Gift of Life Harvests.

Contacts medical examiner per regulatory requirements.

Participates in deposit and retrieval of valuables with security personnel.

Reviews acute care transfers for compliance with EMTALA regulations.
