This position is a great opportunity to join Kleinfelder's growing West Division Environmental Planning & Permitting (EP&P) team. We are looking for the right person to join our Southern California Team based out of our Santa Maria, Los Angeles, Laguna Hills, Riverside or San Diego office.   Kleinfelder is a well-established industry leader providing engineering and environmental services for over 60 years. We are looking to further develop our Biology Practice to complement our existing services and work collaboratively with our EP&P service line experts locally and across the region. This is an exciting and challenging position that requires a highly organized and responsive candidate, with exceptional verbal and written communication skills capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Position responsibilities and qualifications are summarized below. Job Responsibilities: Field SurveysHolds existing permits or is able to obtain permits to serve as approved biologist on ongoing projects for species that may include desert tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, California tiger salamander or California red-legged frog.Conduct general biology surveys, including biological reconnaissance and habitat assessments, vegetation community mapping, focused species surveys and/or pre-construction clearance surveysAssist with jurisdictional waters delineations and preparation of aquatic resources reportsConduct field work that may involve rugged terrain, occasional overnight travel, inclement weather, and carrying equipment/suppliesConduct pre-construction clearance surveys and monitoring during construction activitiesTake and maintain accurate field notes and maps, work logs, etc. Technical Writing/Task ManagementPreparation of technical reports that include biological assessment reports, reconnaissance survey and focused species survey results, and biological sections of CEQA or NEPA documentsDesktop survey and preparation of a constraints analysisAssist with preparation of aquatic resource permit applications and supporting materialsAssist with preparation of proposals, resumes, and marketing materialsOperate vehicles safely, including 4-wheel-drive vehicles on rugged, back-country roadsFollow industry-leading health and safety protocols and reporting procedures Position Requirements:  5 - 10 years of experience of completing field biological surveys, habitat assessments, wetland/aquatic resource delineations, and/or construction monitoringKnowledge of common plants and wildlife in California Strong technical writing skills for technical document preparation, environmental planning projects and/or compliance programsCommunicate effectively to share information in a clear and concise manner, and collaborate with diverse groups of professionals with a variety of backgroundAble to work independently and collaborate with a variety of diverse colleaguesFamiliarity with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations protecting biological resourcesMicrosoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, and Excel)GIS Collector or similar GIS software and GPS equipment for data collection and analysisValid California Driver's License with a clean driving record over the last 3 yearsAbility to use electronic tablet/device for field data collection, scheduling, and communication with team members.  Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, ecology, zoology, natural resource management, environmental science, or other related sciences field Additional Preferred Skills/Experience: Prior approval as a qualified/authorized biologistCurrent Scientific Collection Permit (SCP) from California Department of Fish and Wildlife Experience working for an environmental consulting firmExperience conducting focused botanical surveys and/or listed wildlife surveysExperience conducting bird identification and nest surveysPrior experience with GIS software, Survey123, Smartsheet, Google Earth, and GPS equipment for data collection and analysis Move Forward with KleinfelderKleinfelder has been connecting great people to the best work since 1961.
