Recently named a Forbes America's Best-In-State Employer 2022! What you'll do The OR Tech III, under general supervision by the OR Manager, serves as the expert in the area of OR Technology. This position assists in teaching other technologists, both in their area of expertise and otherwise as assigned. The ORT III is responsible for all behaviors and skills in the ORT I and II job descriptions and will spend at least 75% of total work time in these roles, as well as those outlined in this document. The ORT III is a member of the leadership team in Perioperative Services and demonstrates competence in leadership skills as well as technical skills. Clinical / Technical/Financial Responsibilities: Demonstrates the assimilation of the principles of asepsis and patient and staff safety in performance of duties. Monitors other Technicians in this role and serves as a resource for Registered Nurses as required. Is the clinical / technical expert for instrumentation, supplies and equipment in the assigned area. Responsible for monitoring the management of the surgical field in general, to assure minimal waste of supplies and equipment. Makes recommendations to the Director for cost savings initiatives. Demonstrates expert skills in all specialties with particularly special attention to specialties of the team to which assigned as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Maintains skills and expertise in scrubbing all surgical specialties as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Able to teach all specialties and serves as a mentor and resource for other staff members, setting the standard for Operating Room Technician skill maintenance as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Uses past clinical experience and knowledge to assist other technicians in problem solving and in immediate patient care problems as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback Drafts new policies or procedures, implements as approved and assures compliance of those already established as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Assures that preference cards remain current and accurate as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Validates OR personnel in specialty equipment as assigned as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Monitors ORT training, recommends assignment to call duties and assures appropriate backup for novice personnel while pulling call as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Monitors and maintains judicious use of supplies and safe handling of equipment and directs other technicians in the same skills as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. In coordination with the Team Leader, maintains inventory for their specialty as measured by indirect managerial observation. Follows established policies to acquire supplies and equipment, serves as the role model and monitors compliance with these policies as measured by indirect managerial observation. Maintains all assigned specialty equipment for the assigned team as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Works with the Team Leader to identify budget needs of team surgical specialties as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Partners with Team Leaders to lead product, supply, instrument evaluation for efficiency, quality and cost and recommends changes as appropriate as measured by indirect and direct managerial observation. Participates in and assists in management of staffing patterns that reflect variable demands of service as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Operational Responsibilities: Behavior exhibits knowledge of interpersonal and leadership skills, importance of teamwork and consideration of others. Serves as a resource for all team members in operational efficiency, continuous improvement processes, and maintaining clear communications. Demonstrates collaborative practice with all members of the healthcare team as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Demonstrates initiative in expanding and sharing knowledge as measured by indirect managerial observation. Participates in continued education through attendance and presentations at in-service sessions as measured by indirect managerial observation. Participates in the hiring team and interviews ORTs and OR Nurses as measured by indirect managerial observation. Works closely with the Nurse Educator to assure appropriate teaching techniques are used in the training of ORTs as measured by indirect managerial observation. Keeps Education records up-to-date and monitors all ORT team members and trainees to assure that educational records and validations are complete as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Attends continuing education programs and routinely offers presentations at in-service sessions as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Communicates with patients and coworkers using means to protect patient privacy and maintain confidentiality as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback Adheres to hospital policies with particular attention to protect patient's rights and confidentiality as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Communicates necessary information to supervisor or team leader in support of unit, departmental and facility standards and policies as measured by indirect managerial observation. Demonstrates concern for culture of safety for patients and staff as measured by direct supervisory observation and co-worker feedback. Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed What we need from you Education: One of the following is required: Successful completion of a nationally accredited education program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization, or.... Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or .... Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, or .... Provides evidence of employment as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring between 2011 and 2015; or .... Is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to a Surgical technologist. or .... Received education in an accredited program for licensed practical nursing. Experience: Minimum 5 years experience as a surgical technologist, required 2 years of material management experience or related experience may be substituted for one year of the above requirement Licensure/Certifications: Current Surgical Technologist certification, required (Previously employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring within the four years immediately prior to January 1, 2015 will waive this requirement); or ....
