Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an accredited cardiovascular perfusion training program.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. A non-certified new graduate may practice under direct supervision of an Illinois licensed Perfusionist if board eligible and actively seeking board certification. A non-certified Perfusionist seeking certification must achieve certification within one calendar year from the date of graduation from an accredited perfusion school.Licensed by the state of Illinois or license requirements being actively pursued. Non-licensed Perfusionist may practice under direct supervision of Illinois licensed Perfusionist, (as indicated by Perfusion Practice Act, Illinois Department of Professional Regulation, 2002), for time period of up to one year from date of graduation from an accredited perfusion school while actively seeking certification and licensure.License pending in the State of Illinois. With proof active licensure as a Perfusionist under the laws of another state, territory, or country equal to the State of Illinois and application of licensure by endorsement to the State of Illinois, a State of Illinois license-pending Perfusionist may practice under direct supervision of a State of Illinois licensed Perfusionist for time period of up to six months from date of application for the State of Illinois license.BLS required. Responsibilities Maintains responsibility to the Cardiac Surgeon during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) procedures.Functions and operates the heart lung machine.Inspects all tubing and other items inserted into the heart lung machine.Administers blood, blood products, drugs, and fluids into CPB equipment as prescribed by attending physician.Maintains a working knowledge of the intra-aortic balloon pump.Identifies and distinguishes various equipment used for different bypass procedures.Uses of blood processors and sequestering devices (autologous blood processors and hemoconcentrators).Maintains basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, blood gas analysis, electrolytes, gas exchange, and hemodilution as it relates to CPB.Maintains certification and licensure as indicated in specifications above.Maintains continuing education.Abides by the operating room rules and regulations as related to dress code, sterile technique, and sterilization.Maintains correct and precise charting on the appropriate record during an open heart procedure.Rotates call, providing coverage 24 hours per day, seven days per week.Maintains knowledge in the theory and use of circulatory assist devices, portable cardiopulmonary bypass, and other related devices and procedures.Maintains working knowledge of platelet gel and platelet concentrate procedures with the ability to carry out such procedures.Acquires the knowledge of the different preferences of each surgeon and adjust accordingly.Abides by MHS Behavioral Standards.Maintains working knowledge of HIPEC procedure.Performs other related work as required or requested.
