BRIEF SUMMARY:    Responsible for evaluation, planning, implementation of Recreation Therapy services within the Department. Designs and implements specialized therapeutic recreational groups for patients and families on all program areas, including education, support services and community resources.  Works within a team in the delivery of care.

POSITION CRITERIA           

Considerable knowledge of the therapeutic recreation principles, techniques and methods and their application to the population served.

Knowledge of the physiological, sociological, and psychological implications for the disease processes experienced by the population served.

Ability to evaluate patients and interpret data

Ability to plan, develop and facilitate psychoeducation and recreational therapy groups and programs.

Ability to evaluate client progress and to present evaluative reports in interdisciplinary team meetings

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand  coordination. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 100 pounds (with assistance). Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

Certificates, License, Registrations: Eligible license or registration

Recreation Therapist: National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certificate (NCTRC) required or working toward under supervision

Art Therapist:  ATR Required

Occupational Therapist: National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapist;  appropriate State License

Social Worker:  Licensed not eligible for Psycho-Education Specialist; may be working toward licensure, but not yet completed.
 

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Recreation Therapy, Occupational Therapist, or Expressive Therapist. 

Licensed or certified as required by appropriate state or national licensing board or working toward under supervision

Experience in working in a psychiatric setting highly preferred.

Basic Life Support Certification: Required, provided by Hospital program within 30 days of hire

Special physical requirements: sits and stands throughout the day. Physical management of patients in crisis situation may be necessary.

Required Job Specific Training:  De-Escalation training within 90 days of hire; Group Training

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: (not all-inclusive)

It is expected that all of the Principal Duties and Responsibilities identified below will be performed in a manner that reflects the values of Catholic Health Partners, which are: Compassion, Excellence, Human Dignity, Justice, Sacredness of Life and Service

Develops and implements specialized rehabilitation therapy services for patients to promote social interaction, to encourage beneficial and appropriate utilization of leisure time and improve overall wellness.

Evaluates rehabilitation therapy needs for patients with particular attention to activities of daily living, communication skills, physical exercise, and positive coping strategies.

Plans, organizes and facilitates assigned groups and rehabilitation therapy programs.  Coordinates with milieu staff for the implementation of special activities or programming occurring outside scheduled therapy hours as needed (weekends/holidays).

Actively participates in the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team (IDTT) and coordinates services with milieu staff.

Documents patient status and progress in patient's medical record as per program guidelines.

Meets individually (as needed) with clients and/or their families to work on treatment goals through the use of rehabilitation activities.

Participates in the discharge planning for patients, as part of the treatment team.

Evaluates effectiveness of treatment; integrates new information and skills as needed to improve treatment outcomes.

Develops and updates the community resource network program for the rehabilitation therapy program.   With the treatment team, provides referrals to community resources after discharge as needed.

Supervises and gives specific directions to students, staff and volunteers during rehabilitation therapy activities.

Orders rehabilitation therapy supplies/equipment with regard to need, cost and timeliness. 

Keeps within budget constraints.  Follows procedures set for purchasing and reimbursement of expenses.  Maintains inventory of rehabilitation supplies/equipment reconciling purchase order requests to maximize accountability, maintain safety of equipment, and ensure the appropriate levels of supplies/equipment necessary for continuity of program activities.

Works with team members and/or Director to provide appropriate coverage for scheduled absences.

Adheres to the standards and policies of the Corporate Responsibility Program, including the duty to comply with applicable laws and regulations, and reports to designated Manager (or employer hotline) any suspected unethical, fraudulent, or unlawful acts or policies.

Participates in the supervision of clinical interns or students and/or volunteers, utilizing orientation, observation, record reviews, feedback and evaluations as required.

Participates in the safe management of the milieu, intervening effectively with patients who behave inappropriately or who are having coping difficulty, utilizing effective non-abusive crisis prevention/intervention techniques. 

Treats patients and families with empathy and respect.

Maintains effective working relationships with team members, (requires both flexibility and setting limits).

Performs work in accordance with the facility standards and policies regarding risk management, safety, infection control, etc.

Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care to our patients, families,  and co-workers.
