Purpose

Preserve the rich history of Northern Nevada by becoming a part of Newmont’s Nevada ranches. As a ranch worker you will complete a variety of tasks supporting our four main ranching operations, established in the late 1800’s. You’ll also become part of a group of folks dedicated to conserving the natural wildlife of our region and supporting the environmental stewardship of over 2,000,000 acres of land.

Essential Duties

Performs general farm and ranch duties as assigned.

Fixes fence, moves and bales hay, plants forage crops as directed. Performs tasks such as irrigating, applying fertilizer or chemicals as directed, and plowing, cultivating, and harvesting plantings. Feeds, waters, herds, grazes, castrates, brands, weighs, catches and loads animals. Provides general care to livestock by feeding, providing directed health care, and assisting with breeding, calving, and selling animals. Examines animals to detect diseases and injuries, assists in birth deliveries and administers medications, vaccinations, or insecticides as directed and appropriate. Cleans and maintains animal housing areas. Ensures that farm machinery, equipment, and tools are operational by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning and making minor repairs within demonstrated capability. Long periods on horseback are required.

Training & Experience

Three years of experience working on a ranch and performing work such as caring for livestock, fixing fence, mowing and baling hay and operating farm equipment is preferred. For safety, must be able to read English sufficiently to understand written directions. Possession of a valid driver’s license is required.

Working Conditions

The ranches’ elevations, soils and vegetation vary from salt-desert shrub in the lower elevation valleys, to sagebrush on the mountain slopes, to aspen trees at the higher elevations. Irrigated croplands and meadows represent the ‘farmland’ on the ranches. Dispersed throughout are riparian areas and associated meadows, springs and streams. Wildlife is abundant and includes many species of neo-tropical birds, waterfowl and upland birds, mule deer, pronghorn antelope and other species. Some of the streams on our ranch land support Lahontan Cutthroat Trout – a threatened species.
