Initiates, maintains, and discontinues basic and intensive respiratory therapy techniques and equipment in the administration of prescribed respiratory care procedures to patients with cardiopulmonary disorders.

Qualifications

Education:

Graduate of an approved AMA school of respiratory care is required.

 

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

Possesses a valid and active Illinois Respiratory Care Practitioner license is required.Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care or registry eligible required.Current CPR certification or acquired within 30 days of hire.Must possess a valid IL driver’s license and must be deemed as an acceptable driver in accordance with the MHS Fleet Safety Policy (five year MVR will be required).

Experience:

One or more years of skill homecare experience preferred, including the care of tracheotomy and ventilator patients.

 

Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to provide respiratory care and therapy to patients of all ages and conditions, including ventilator dependent and tracheotomy patients is required.Ability to push and pull up to 60 pounds and occasionally lift up to 35 pounds is required.Possesses the knowledge of, or demonstrates the willingness to learn, Medicare coverage guidelines and basic reimbursement policies is required. Responsibilities

 

Prepares and tests respiratory therapy equipment for proper and safe operation and periodically checks equipment in use and on units for proper operations and routine service. Reports malfunctioning equipment to manager.

 

Follows and enforces safety rules, instructions, and procedures of Memorial Home Services of CI to contain and minimize the spread of infection.

 

Receives, documents, and executes physicians’ orders relating to respiratory therapy policies and procedures. Interprets and evaluates physician orders and charts that pertain to respiratory care and identifies possible contraindications to medications, treatments, and related hazard with their use.

 

Instructs patients and caregivers on the use and maintenance of home equipment, i.e., ventilators, apnea monitors, oxygen delivery systems, etc.

 

Assesses patients’ conditions and responses to respiratory therapy by checking pulse, respiratory frequency, cough, sputum, breath sounds, and other pertinent data related to patients in the home. Recognizes and treats adverse reactions and emergency situations arising during visit and relates them to the appropriate physician.

 

Modifies therapy in accordance with respiratory therapy policies and procedures in cases of adverse or ineffective patient response and reports changes to physician.

 

Records procedures, patient responses, and compliance with departmental documentation requirements. Relays same information orally or in writing to physician.

 

Participates in in-service, continuing education, and other staff development activities to develop and maintain necessary competencies.

 

Maintains the security and confidentiality of all patient records and information.

 

Performs nasal and tracheal suctioning of patients and obtains tracheal secretions for cultures. Instructs patients and caregivers in regards to caring for artificial airways and the maintenance of all supplies.

 

Assists with discharge planning processes for hospitalized patients.

 

Maintains, monitors, and provides respiratory care to patients on continuous mechanical ventilators.

 

Assesses patients’ home environment and caregiver support.

 

Instructs patients, families, and other hospital personnel in the proper use of respiratory therapy equipment and the associated procedures and techniques used.

 

Makes recommendations for changes and improvements in home care equipment and procedures to maintain best practice.

 

Participates in departmental or multidisciplinary teams related to clinical quality, safety, education, best practice, patient satisfaction, or process improvement.

 

Serves as a back-up for other areas within the unit or department, especially during times of special needs or staff absences.

 

Collects and tracks data for Respiratory Care programs as determined by the Director or team leader

 

Performs other related work as required or requested.
