SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Assist the Nursery Manager in the execution of all activities related to the corn nursery seed production, including preparation, planting, pollinating, data collecting, harvesting, shelling, and inventory recording of the summer and counter-season corn nurseries. Also responsible for training and supervision of temporary part-time staff that assist with nursery activities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Collaborates with the nursery manager, corn breeders and other stakeholders in all activities related to the effective execution of all plans related to the corn nurseries. Assist in the organization of the inbreds and developmental material in storage and the inventory records that coincide with the physical inventory. Coordinate and prepare materials for breeding projects at US Research sites and counter season nurseries. Travel to nursery sites within and outside of the US during pollination and harvest to collect notes. Collaborates with the Line Breeding Team in developing and implementing new technologies to increase efficiency throughout the line breeding process. Effective training and utilization of seasonal workers is essential. All workers involved in the nursery operations must perform the work to the designated quality standards. Provide support and assistance to operations and testing team at key times of the year. Ensure safety rules are always followed. Promote a positive image of the company and the research department. Other duties as required by supervisor.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s Degree in agricultural field required, master’s a plus. Experience in managing a large corn nursery breeding operation is a plus, but not required.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Excellent planning and organization skills. Good communication skills, both verbal and written. Ability to work as part of a team. Ability to plan and manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to learn multiple computer software programs for data collection and retrieval. Ability to obtain a forklift operator license. Ability to obtain a pesticide/herbicide applicator license. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint preferred) and common PC based software.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to lift 50 lbs. Ability to work extended hours outdoors during the entire growing season. Ability to travel up to 10%, some overnight travel required. Must have a valid driver’s license and meet MVR guidelines.
