Research Scientist

The Department of Ophthalmology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, seeks Research Scientists to work in the Center for Advanced Vision Science.

Research Scientists are expected to:

Perform assigned tasks independently. In addition to a firm background in the particular field, Research Scientists should demonstrate the ability to lead small groups and work without additional supervision once objectives are defined and methods of approach are set.

Minimum Requirements: 

Requires a doctoral degree or master's degree with significant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

One-to-three years of experience in a basic science laboratory, with the ability of unsupervised planning, execution, data collection, and analyses.

Strong communicator who works well in a team setting.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Basic science knowledge using advanced techniques in one or more fields encompassing molecular biology, immunology, bioinformatics, genomics, protein isolation and characterization, Western, IP, 2-DIGE, ELISA, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, RNA isolation and characterization, qPCR, oligo-arrays, in vivo imaging, cell culture and transfection.

Computer skills for data analysis and interpretation

Proficiency in Windows, Office, AdobeSuite applications, SPSS or other statistical software, and ImageJ.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
