SCIENCE AND REGULATORY MANAGER

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Supervises Scientists and/or other members of the Science and Regulatory team to ensure activities are consistent with company policies on industry advocacy. Performs scientific and biomedical reviews of web-based, peer-reviewed and vendor-sourced technical materials pertaining to ingredients, technologies, clinical studies, physiology, chemistry and safety in order to create recommendations, develop product concepts, create product formulations, substantiate and write structure/function (S/F) claims. Develops and maintains relationships with raw material vendors for the purpose of new product development. Provides advanced expertise and makes the determination of regulatory status of dietary ingredients pertaining to their pre-DSHEA or NDI status, including safety assessment of ingredients subject to regulatory status determination. Expands NOW’s product line through proposal of ingredients, product formulation, delivery systems, and packaging options. Manages the ingredient evaluation process in partnership with the marketing department. Manages multiple projects that require collaborating with internal and outside experts involving scientific analysis. Acts as a resource to the Marketing and R&D department regarding new or existing product formulations. Acts as a resource for consulting and advisory knowledge and serves as a mentor and trainer in areas of expertise. Maintains active involvement in industry trade and scientific organizations. Presents training materials and scientific information on webinars and at conferences and trade shows. Complies with safety and GMP requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Ph.D. in Food Science, Nutrition, or related field is required; 2 years of management experience is required. A working knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and nutrition is required.   

LANGUAGE SKILLS 

Ability to read, analyze and interpret published biomedical periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or patents is required.   The ability to write routine technical reports, summaries of scientific research publications and product information bulletins, and interpret data to develop S/F claims is required. Good verbal and written communication skills are required with an ability to effectively present and communicate technical information and respond to questions from groups of business managers, customers, consumers, scientists and co-workers is essential.  

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Basic computer skills required, including proficiency with Word and Excel.   Internet keyword searching and scientific research skills preferred, using on-line biological and medical databases.  Ability to read, understand and extract information from scientific articles is required, as well as ability to compile and summarize information.  Excellent time management, attention to detail, listening, decision-making, and organizational skills are essential.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 

Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical significance as well as the ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.  

 

REASONING ABILITY 

Ability to interpret and solve problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Employee is expected to occasionally travel to conferences and customers, including air travel.
