SENIOR COACH COUNSELOR

The primary responsibilities of a Senior Coach Counselor/Group Living Counselor are to provide safety and around-the-clock supervision of at-risk youth. This position provides for the physical, personal and health needs of each student through individual counseling and behavioral/social/physical and educational skill development; provides an atmosphere that is supportive of the needs to the students; monitors and documents student behaviors and activities; participates and assists with educational, social, athletic and recreational activities; works in collaboration with other professional staff to establish and/or meet the goals of each student's treatment plan. The Senior Coach Counselor/ Group Living Counselor is distinguished from Coach Counselor/ Group Living Counselor only in that in this role a Senior Coach Counselor / Group Living Counselor will also perform in an operational working supervisor role. Typically reports to a Group Leader but may vary by individual location.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Adheres to the facility and daily schedule, ensures that the facility (unit, cottage, house, room, dorm, etc.) is on time for all elements and the students participate in all of the scheduled activities. Completes daily assignments as specified by the Group Leader or higher authority, including duties of a Coach Counselor. Promotes a sense of community by teaching and modeling cooperation, respect, and responsibility in the group living environment; encouraging participants to interact with one another and creating opportunities for them to do so. Observes behavior patterns of students in order to detect signs of depression, anger, and/or other emotional and situational problems/issues and initiates proper program behavior management and intervention techniques. Encourages and supports the students academic, vocation, athletic and treatment participation. Facilities problem solving through active listening, guidance, and conflict mediation with staff and students.  Assists in the training of Coach Counselors on Coaching techniques, group interactions, and program requirements, including subduing and/or restraining techniques in order to ensure a safe and secure environment.  Personally provides and ensures consistent interactive supervision of the students (know where they are and what they are doing at all times) is provided by the coaching staff and provides operational guidance and direction in usual, unusual and non-standard situations in various program elements such us: Living environment Positive Skill Development Groups School environment Community service Sporting programs Extra-curricular activities Student work programs Student internships Maintain through and accurate records, files, correspondence and statistics; completes necessary documentation (both hand-written and computer based/data entry) in a timely, accurate, complete and legible manner. May include, but not limited to: notations in the shelter log, bed roster, incident reports, late arrivals, sign-in sheets, showers and laundry schedules, and any other forms used or as directed by the supervisor and site requirements. Ensures coaching staff complete required records, reports and documentation. Assists coaching staff with the completion of records, reports, and documentation.  Resolves problems and mediates conflicts involving students and/or staff encountered during daily operations, determines appropriate solutions and/ or seeks out assistance from Group Leader or higher authority. Observes and appropriately responds personally and though subordinates to incidents such as assaults' on staff and/or students, run-away attempts, program disturbances or other situations threatening the safety health and/ or welfare of the facility, community and daily operations.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Internal applicants must be a Coach Counselor with no less than standard performance and at least 90 days of experience at Rite of Passage in a Coach Counselor or higher Direct Care Position. Staff in this position must have completed Initial Qualification Training (Tech 22) prior to placement in this position. External candidates must have 1-year prior experience working with at-risk youth in a similar position as a Couch Counselor or higher Direct Care position or at least 60 hours of college education in a directly related field of study. Staff must complete operations, Treatment and Human Resources Essential Subject Training within 6 months of placement in the position. Supervisory experience preferred. 

SHIFT WORK SCHEDULE

3.5 days, 44 hours a week
