Haymarket Media, Inc. is seeking a Senior Medical Editor to join a dynamic, science-minded team of grammar nerds, otherwise known as Haymarket’s Medical Communications Group. The Senior Medical Editor will be responsible for overseeing the development of compelling news and long form reporting for a website focused on the research and practice of sleep medicine for a clinical audience. The Senior Medical Editor will publish daily content in a variety of formats (eg, text, video, audio).This position is located in our New York office, with a hybrid schedule that allows for in-office collaboration with the team on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and remote work on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. 

Job Overview:

The Senior Medical Editor is responsible for keeping the sleep specialists awake! In this role you will manage the development of high quality, accurate, and engaging content for an audience of sleep medicine specialists (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and others). Examples of the content types that this role will be responsible for developing include news, feature articles, slideshows, polls, videos, quizzes, and podcasts. The Senior Medical editor must have a familiarity with producing and editing medical content for a clinical audience. They will also be responsible for assessing the audience’s engagement in published content by using analytical tools and conducting outreach, and using that information to tailor editorial offerings to better meet the audience’s needs. This position is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual who is seeking to contribute to the growth of a brand from its inception while also having the opportunity to utilize resources and processes developed by a well-established editorial team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Managing and mentoring the brand’s assistant editor

Managing a team of freelance medical journalists for news and feature content creation

Independently creating feature content (e.g., disease overviews, clinician interviews, podcast episodes)

Editing and meticulously fact-checking scientific content

Collaborating with the larger editorial team to to meet timelines and priorities while adhering to workflows

Posting articles to WordPress

Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure content is available for daily email newsletters, sponsored product newsletters, and other marketing efforts 

Ensuring SEO adherence through consistent use of best practices while monitoring growth and performance using analytics tools (Google Analytics) 

Providing real-time coverage of major medical meetings 

Overseeing and maintaining editorial budgets  

Skills and Requirements: 

Bachelor’s degree in English/Journalism/Communications or Biological Sciences; advanced degree and clinical experience desirable; experience in/exposure to sleep medicine or related medical specialties preferred 

5+ years’ experience in medical publishing/communications/advertising, with excellent ability to edit and fact check medical content, including proficiency with AMA style 

Proficient at maintaining a robust volume of content and a steady daily flow of article publication 

Management and/or mentorship experience

Excellent reading comprehension, listening and analytical skills, and oral and written communication skills 

A successful record of handling multiple simultaneous projects and adhering to deadlines 

Experience as a strong team player who can work independently and cross-functionally within an organization and follow through on all assigned tasks 

Knowledge of SEO and social media best practices, and other digital promotional strategies 

Understanding of the needs of medical professional audiences, or demonstrated ability to identify the needs of a highly specialized audience; experience in content targeted to an audience of health care specialists preferred

The salary range for this position is $75,000–$90,000. Compensation will be commensurate with experience, skill level, functional and/or industry knowledge, education level, certifications, as well as other qualifications.
