Your Opportunity

Your role as a Senior Mechanical Engineer on our professional consulting services team is to work independently on large projects of high complexity, and as a leader of a team or project through all phases of a project lifecycle. You are responsible for developing and implementing an engineering discipline group equipped with up-to-date engineering and design tools and innovations, technical and supervisory capabilities and operating procedures to successfully and efficiently execute projects and consulting services resulting in client satisfaction and on-time delivery. Work consists of advanced mechanical design for the built environment including but not limited to HVAC, piping and plumbing, and the use of digital practice technology such as AutoCAD and Revit as well as mechanical engineering specific computer applications.

Your Key Responsibilities

Project Involvement - approx. 90% of time

Designs mechanical systems for the built environment as Engineer of Recored. Performs field investigations and analyzes existing conditions to develop comprehensive engineering solutions. Applies strong buildings mechanical engineering skills and knowledge to produce accurate and timely deliverables. Prepares required calculations to meet project requirements. Supports project requirements including basis-of design narratives, opinions-of-probable-costs estimates, drawing documentation, systems design and technical specifications.  Collaborates with project managers and supporting design staff as part of a coordinated design team. Actively participates in the development of design staff through work on projects as well as serving as a trainer, mentor and resource for junior design staff. Handles design development and document preparation in written and computer-aided design formats. Effectively delegates work to production support staff. Researches, prepares, and presents coordinated design options. Reviews drawings and researches code issues to comply with national, city, state, and county regulations. Interacts with clients and project stakeholders. Communicates with manufacturers and contractors to address challenges and develop practical designs. Provides input on the creation and editing of technical specifications. Provides contract documents that meet required codes and quality assurance standards. Resolves design conflicts and questions and provides recommendations to address issues and add value. Understands and works within project budgets and schedules to help project manager meet project financial and schedule goals. Provides construction administration support such as reviewing contractor RFI’s, issuing field directives, performs construction observation and punch lists, reviews contractor change requests. Collaborates with the practice and market leaders to obtain and disseminate technical knowledge. May act as QC reviewer on projects and participates in project Peer Reviews.

Learning/Maintaining and Expanding Technical Skills - approx. 4-5% of time

Maintains and expands current knowledge of technologies, trends and the markets in which we work as they apply to the applicable project types, and continually strengthens skills. Proactively pursues additional knowledge in related disciplines by attending available in house and external training.

Studio and Firm meetings, initiatives, and projects - approx. 1% of time

Attends in-house project meetings. Actively participates in meetings, initiatives, and projects that support studio and firm-wide goals.

Your Capabilities and Credentials Deep buildings mechanical engineering knowledge, including but not limited to HVAC, piping, plumbing and device layouts. Ability to prepare and review detailed drawings. Ability to integrate design elements with architectural, civil, structural, ICT, electrical and other disciplines to deliver a coordinated, constructible design. Strong knowledge applicable codes and standards, including IMC, IPC, NFPA, IBC, and ASHRAE, as well as LEED and green building requirements. Ability to apply logic, reasoning, and organizational skills to structure concepts and ideas into deliverables. Ability to demonstrate a credible and trustworthy presence through professionalism, demeanor, and technical knowledge. Familiarity with and ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects. Knowledge of specialty engineering applications. Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively support technical project consultation with key clients and project stakeholders. Familiarity with CAD and Building Information Modeling (BIM) software; in particular, AutoCAD MEP and Revit MEP. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in related field. LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred Minimum of 8 years of experience. LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred Experience working on Healthcare, Transportation/Vehicle Maintenance, and Data/Technology Facilities preferred.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
