Sr. Mechanical Engineer

Our team is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer at our Bloomfield, CT location.  The successful candidate will develop the mechanical design of laser & beam delivery systems, production & test equipment, and product packaging for new product introductions and legacy products. The position reports directly to Mechanical Engineering Management.
 

Primary Responsibilities

Participate in Design Reviews, Phase Gate Reviews, Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA’s), and Program Reviews. Assist in the creation of (design) Requirements Documents, where high-level functionality requests from management or our customers are used to create a detailed and actionable list of features and performance metrics required to achieve said requests. Provide design support for existing products and ancillary production equipment, (support Manufacturing Engineering team). Provide design support for New Product Introductions (NPI) and ancillary production & test equipment, (support R&D, Product, and Reliability Engineering teams). Design support includes: Conceptual Design development of products, tools, handling equipment, and test benches Creating Assembly Drawings dimensional drawings Providing Oracle “Engineering Change Order” (ECO) support Occasionally customer interfacing to present / review designs Troubleshooting issues affecting assembly & yield Provide design support to Sales: Customer interface drawings 3D Models of laser configurations to support new applications or upgrades to existing equipment Designing shipping crate to isolate critical vibration frequencies & protect against specified shock conditions Collaborate with an external Mechanical Engineering Team.  Topics may include alignment on drafting standards & procedures, conceptual design reviews, and delegation of work. Conduct Finite Element Analysis of critical design elements as is required to ensure the robustness of new designs, and in accordance with the NPI Process. Highly proficient with SolidWorks & EPDM Assist in NPI purchasing of custom fabricated and commercial parts:  Participate in purchasing reviews Add new components to a “Program Purchasing Tracker” Checking conceptual designs and dimensional drawings of Junior Mechanical Engineering staff & contract Engineers prior to pursuing fabrication. Participate in the installation & testing of new component & sub-assembly designs to ensure fitment, ease of assembly, and functionality goals have been achieved. Design custom shipping crates for prototype products. May include: Support product fragility testing. (Modal analysis or sine sweep vibration analysis). Fortifying product design to reduce excessive fragility. Estimate hours, schedule, and (occasionally) cost of active design activities. 

Job Requirements:

The ideal candidate thrives in a highly collaborative, fast paced & technical work environment. Strong written & verbal communication. (Ability to effectively present highly technical material). High degree of ownership, a “can-do” attitude, and great time management. Hands-on experience with industrial lasers, opto-mechanical systems. Experience designing / developing opto-mechanical systems. Detail oriented with well refined troubleshooting skills and techniques.

Proficiency with the following programs:

MS Outlook & Teams MS Excel MS Power Point Solid Works & EPDM SolidWorks Simulation or Ansys (nice to have) Oracle / Agile (nice to have)

Education & Experience:

Bachelor of Science, Mechanical Engineering required Master of Science, Mechanical Engineering (preferred) 3 – 5 Years of experience in laser / optical-design 3 - 5 Years of automation machine design Design for Manufacturing / Design for Assembly Design experience for sheet metal, welded, extruded aluminum, and additive manufactured construction Packaging design & analysis Lasers and/or Electronics industry experience strongly preferred Lean Manufacturing training / experience Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus
