SSP/Volunteer Coordinator
Since 1967, Helen Keller National Center (HKNC) has been committed to improving the lives of individuals who are DeafBlind or have a combined hearing and vision loss. We currently have an exciting full time career opportunity available to join the HKNC team as a SSP/Volunteer Coordinator. Responsible for t development and implementation of coordination of a Support Service Provider (SSP) Program for all consumers and employees who are DeafBlind attending or working at Helen Keller National Center (HKNC). Responsible for coordinating the volunteer program. Fosters community partnerships for program recruitment. Maintains quality services through supervision of SSPs, Volunteers, and the provision of training in coordination with Information, Research, and Professional Development (IRPD). This position has flexible hours with a focus on afternoons, early evenings, and weekends. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. + Scheduling and coordinating SSPs and volunteers: matching consumers and HKNC staff with SSPs and consumers with volunteers using criteria of communication and interpersonal skills as well as preferences and feedback from both consumers, SSPs and staff. + Providing group or individual instruction to consumers on how to effectively work with an SSP. Employee may be required to provide training scheduled to meet consumer needs including daytime, evenings, and weekends. + Ensuring SSP policies and procedures are followed by consumers, staff and SSPs. + Participating in curriculum development with IRPD to offer skills and knowledge/ learning to consumers on how to effectively work with SSPs. + Planning and providing training workshops to SSPs in collaboration with IRPD. + Planning and providing training workshops in collaboration with other key staff for volunteers. + Recruiting potential SSPs and volunteers from sources such as colleges, universities, interpreting programs, church groups, and the community. + Acting as spokesperson to create public awareness about HKNC SSP and volunteer programs. + Providing feedback to consumers, volunteers and SSPs, and monitoring effective implementation of services. + Evaluating consumer satisfaction. + Participating in grant writing or other activities to promote program reach and to obtain future funds to support SSP services locally and statewide. + Collaborating with other SSP programs (including those agencies who participate in the HKNC DeafBlind National Community of Practice) or volunteer agencies and contributes to professional development. + Actively participating in projects with local community for the purpose of recruitment to the program. + Maintaining accurate records including the tracking of assignments and documenting the utilization of services. + Submitting invoices for payment, reports, and other necessary documentation for planning purposes. + Creating or identifying data collection tools to achieve accurate recordkeeping and documentation. + Planning the appreciation day/week activities for volunteers. + Resolving problems within the department in partnership with applicable departments within the agency. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Direct Reports include Contractors performing SSP and volunteer work. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Accountable for the cost-effective use of HKS resources –financial resources, human resources within his/her direct reporting lines and HKS property under his/her span of control. REQUIRED EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE + Bachelor’s degree required in Counseling, Education, Human Services, Sign Language Interpreting, Special Education or a related field. + Five years’ experience working with the DeafBlind community. + Competency in American Sign Language. + Knowledge of SSP services and programs.
