Position Summary

GEICO is seeking an experienced Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications.  You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
 

Position Description

Our Staff Engineer works with our Distinguished Engineer and Sr. Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve, and enhance existing systems and identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. You will lead Strategy and Execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in the Open-Source Database platform domain.

Position Responsibilities
As a Staff Engineer, you will:

Focus on multiple areas and provide technical and thought leadership to the enterpriseCollaborate with product managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve our toughest problemsDevelop and execute technical software development strategy for the Platform Engineering domainAccountable for the quality, usability, and performance of the solutionsBe a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering and product community. Influence and educate executivesConsistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teamsAnalyze cost and forecast, incorporating them into business plansDetermine and support resource requirements, evaluate operational processes, measure outcomes to ensure desired results, demonstrate adaptability and sponsor continuous learningWilling to take on-call and operation support

Qualifications

Deep hands-on experience in complex system design and data pipeline and architectures, scale and performance, tuning, with good knowledge on Docker and KubernetesExperience with J2EE, XML, SQL, XML, and PowerShell ScriptingAdvance knowledge of at least one OOP languages such as Java, .NET, Go, Python, C++, etcAdvance knowledge of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript is preferred Good knowledge of one of the following languages: VB, PHP, Perl, Ruby, SQL, etc.Understand open-source databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc., familiar with No-SQL databases like ONgDB, Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, etc.Experience in architecting, designing, building automation, workflows, custom objects/apps, declarative functionality, triggers, migration tools in BMC Helix platform and transition such platform to Open Source is a big plus.Experience building and configuring flows, and process buildersStrong understanding of web service integration (REST/SOAP) and enterprise middleware integration tiersAbility to articulate channel dataflow and process flow including email, messaging, chat, mobile Push and SDK'sExcellent communication skills – needs to be able to lead projects from the front and interact with clients and sponsors on a regular basisExperience partnering with engineering teams and transferring research to productionExperience with continuous delivery (CI/CD) and Infrastructure as CodeIn-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithmsExperience solving analytical problems with quantitative approachesExperience with Windows Server Administration and Windows Event LogAbility to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environmentWilling to work on both fast development and operation environmentKnowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, test automation and related tools, operations, real-time communication)Knowledge in big data and streaming data pipeline architecture (Lambda/Kappa) and K8 clusterExperience in open-source tools like GIT/Jenkin/CircleCI, and knowledge in Terraform/Ansible is a plusExperience solving analytical problems with quantitative approachesKnowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, test automation and related tools, operations, real-time communication)Knowledge in ML and AI technologiesKnowledge on Open-source monitoring software like Grafana and Prometheus

Experience

6+ years of professional experience in software development, platform architecture, administration, governance, infrastructure management, installation, and maintenance of the hardware, software, and network systems4+ years of experience in open-source frameworks3+ years of experience with architecture and design3+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or hybrid data center

Education

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

 

Annual Salary

$110,000.00 - $261,500.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
