Summary: 

The service coordinator meets all requirements of the sterile processing technician levels I, II and III job skills. The coordinator demonstrates expertise of sterile processing knowledge and application of American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) standards. The coordinator has recognized leadership qualities and responsibilities which include mentoring levels I, II and III technicians, providing educational inservicing, and functioning in the charge role. The coordinator is responsible for participation in departmental and hospital programs for quality assessment and improvement, identifying opportunities and proactively working to continuously improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with goals of Baystate Health System. The coordinator is knowledgeable of hospital policies and protocols of regualatory bodies such as: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Public Health (DPH), Joint Commission (JC), AAMI and Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) as they pertain to sterile processing.

Job Responsibilities: 

1) Demonstrates advanced knowledge and application of sterilization standards and practices. Assumes charge role and on call responsibilities as needed. Accountable for 100% of all required skills for assigned services.

2) Demonstrates success in precepting and mentoring sterile processing technicians levels I, II and III. Monitors and enforces policy procedure and compliance. Plans and provides educational inservices for staff through independent research and study. Demonstrates in depth knowledge of surgical specialties and remains current with new technologies and surgical trends.

3) Demonstrates leadership skills by establishing work priorities, organizing, assigning and coordinating work activities of sterile processing technicians to meet the demands of our customers. Adjust work flow for maximum efficiency.

6) Maintains, collects and audits daily records for decontamination, disinfection and sterilization, and equipment maintenance. Identifies reports and follows through on machine malfunctions, (sterilizers, ultrasonics, and washer decontaminators). Identifies record keeping deficiencies and follows through with education, correction and notification to manager.

7) Collaborates with operating room service leads regarding purchase needs, par level adjustment and/or utilization of equipment needed.

8) Demonstrates and models commitment to Organizational Service Standards and Operating Principles, Trust, Respect, Integrity, Communication and Collaboration.

9) Demonstrates sound judgement and critical thinking skills for problem solving, obtaining supportive services and following through with critical issues.

10) Communicates and collaborates with department manager to ensure operational and and/or procedural changes have been communicated to staff utilizing verbal reports, shift reports, bulletin board updates, communication notebooks and by email.

Required Work Experience: 

1) 3 to 5 years in sterile processing department with knowledge of operating room and instruments

Skills and Competencies: 

1) Desired: experience as surgical technologist and/or commensurate sterile processing experience and proven leadership skills with knowledge of the operating room and instrumentation

2)  Proficient in computer skills, medical terminology and understanding of anatomy and physiology

3)  Expert skill level in sterilization techniques, decontamination, high level disinfection, instrument tray assembly, case cart preparation, and demonstrated communication and leadership skills
