Summary:
The OR Surgical Scrub Technician is a selected, qualified person, who by means of a well-planned and organized course of instruction, functions proficiently as an instrument person and/or circulating assistant under the direct supervision of qualified professional nurses. The OR Technician is responsible for assisting in the care of the patients, maintenance of supplies and equipment. The OR Surgical Scrub Tech assembles needed instruments and supplies in a manner to maximize.
Experience/Education Requirements:
High school graduate or equivalent required.Completion of RMC mandatory inservices, upon hire and yearly.Completion of 6-8 weeks minimum basic OR orientation within the OR department and continued with preceptors.License or Certification Requirements:

Vision: Required to assist surgeons with scrubbing and scrub assisting. Many OR procedures require keen visual observation because of the size of suture material used/instrumentation used. It is necessary to observe video monitors, and to draw and used by the surgeon during a procedure.
Smell: Helpful to detect electrical fire problems.
Hearing: Telephone communications, meetings, and equipment operating characteristics.
Touch: Necessary to hand instruments during procedures. Necessary to operate controls on equipment.

Instrument flash pans weighing 5-25# are held at waist level and carried from the sterilizer in the scrub rooms down the hallway approximately 20' to as much as 150'. Transporting patients from carts to the OR bed after surgery involves lifting patients who weigh 25-300 lbs. This is distributed by 3 people and a mechanical lifter is used: however, the patients are unable to help for the most part. Carry and push equipment from the storage room to the OR rooms, which is a distance of 10-150 ft. Laundry and garbage bags are carried to the trash room approximately 150-200 ft. Lifting instrument trays from racks to cabinets for storage. Fire extinguishers may need to be carried down 1 flight of stairs or up 5 flights. Because staff is instructed on proper body mechanics risk to staff is reduced.
