DESCRIPTION Under general direction of the Cultural Arts Technical Supervisor, performs skilled and technical duties related to the set-up and break down of live productions and performances; performs technical duties related to sound and lighting system operation; performs other job-related duties as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is a limited-services, on-call specialized technical job classification within the Cultural Arts Division of the City Manager’s office. Incumbents perform duties related to set-up, run, and/or strike of shows and events including assisting with or evaluating set and stage construction and operating stage equipment, lighting and sound systems. Essential and Marginal Duties Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: + Assist with operational activities including set-up, run, and/or strike of shows and events. + Execute scene changes during performances, set hand props, place set pieces, and raise and lower drops, curtains, or scenery. + Perform production load-in and load-out. + Install rigging, lighting, sound equipment and scenery for theatrical, musical and other events. + Operate stage equipment, lighting and sound systems, digital projection equipment and other equipment as required. + Operate and assist with the maintenance of theater equipment, including follow spots, microphones, light control board, automated rigging, hand and power tools. + Prepare or modify working plans, drawings and light plots for specific situations. + Check the stage and production areas for safety hazards and maintain health and safety standards in these areas. + Rig curtains and operate and maintain automated staging system. + Perform minor repairs and general maintenance on stage-related equipment. + Perform related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications KNOWLEDGE OF + Technical theater production systems, including audio, video, carpentry/rigging and lighting. + Types and uses of lighting, sound, automated rigging and other stage equipment. + Computerized theater equipment, theater movement systems. + Electrical theory, sound and lighting effects. + Set-up and running of digital video presentations. + Occupational hazards and related safety precautions associated with assigned duties. ABILITY TO + Operate theater equipment including lighting, sound, and automated rigging systems. + Operate hand and power tools. + Perform basic housekeeping. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and three (3) years of experience in the technical aspects of performing arts productions or related activities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS This job requires working a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Possession of, or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid California drivers’ license.
