What You Will Do:

The Transmission Planning Engineer-Energy Markets West plays a key role in developing, proposing, and delivering solutions related to Transmission Planning, especially focused on the changing industry dynamics as part of a clean energy future. This Transmission Planning Engineer-Energy Markets West position is a highly challenging role that draws heavily upon all of the analytical, creative, and interpersonal skills essential to delivering effective regulatory and general strategy consulting engagements. It is essential for the Transmission Planning Engineer-Energy Markets West to have the ability to assume complete ownership of projects while at the same time being a part of a team. 

The Transmission Planning Engineer will also function as a consultant and must organize their own tasks and schedules in carrying out substantial business analyses and delivering high-quality, client-ready work.  As our clients are often large with complex systems, the Transmission Planning Engineer must demonstrate considerable poise and business maturity to perform effectively and add value in the client environment.  The Transmission Planning Engineer-Energy Markets West must effectively represent and advocate for Guidehouse and our clients in multiple industry forums.

Key Responsibilities:

Transmission planning (and operations) strategy and solutions focused on coordinated operations, infrastructure resilience, and reliability assessmentsManage and act as technical solution delivery lead/consultant on projects related to electrical transmission system planning studies to determine transmission requirements, and generation additions & retirementsFamiliarity with or ability to quickly grasp various transmission planning concepts, practices and procedures, and ability to apply Transmission Planning reliability criteria to perform analysisPerform power systems analysis including transmission planning feasibility studies, System Impact Studies and Generator Interconnection StudiesPerform Steady State, Dynamic Stability Simulation, Voltage Stability Simulation, and Short Circuit AnalysisStudy thermal overloads and recommend mitigations / transmission upgradesDevelop / fine tune dynamic models for conventional and inverter-based resources (IBRs) and implement them for stability/transient simulation based analysis


What You Will Need:

Due to nature of client engagements, must be a US Citizen or US Permanent ResidentBachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or power systems engineering2 plus years United States Bulk Electric System (BES) professional work experience excluding internships, co-ops, academic research, or fellowshipsIn-depth knowledge of Western Interconnect transmission and distribution systems from a planning and operations standpoint. May consider ERCOT or Eastern Interconnect.Familiarity with and ability to quickly become adept at FERC, NERC, and state regulatory requirements and processesAbility to travelTechnical understanding and ability to learn various power systems engineering tools such as PSLF / POWERWORLD Simulator/ PSSE / ASPEN / TARA/ CAPE / DSA Tools / PSCAD or EMPTExcellent oral and written communication skillsOutstanding analytical and problem-solving skillsCurrently reside in or ability to relocate to California. Candidates within reasonable community miles of a Guidehouse office may be required to work a hybrid work schedule instead of 100% remoteStaff level of hire will be determined through Guidehouse interview process


What Would Be Nice To Have:

Master’s degree in electrical engineering or power systems engineeringExperience with WECC and other regional planning agenciesPost graduation work experience using one or more of the following power systems engineering tools: PSLF / POWERWORLD Simulator/ PSSE / ASPEN / TARA/ CAPE / DSATools / PSCAD or EMPTWorking knowledge of ISO/RTO operations and functions, especially CAISOConsulting experience within the utilities industryWork experience with transmission and distribution systems from a planning and operations standpointKnowledge of resource interconnection and expansion planning practices and protocolsFamiliarity with transmission development, including competitive development

The annual salary range for this position is $94,900.00-$142,300.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
