Summary:

The Diagnostic Ultrasound Sonographer uses diagnostic medical ultrasound as the primary technology in their daily work. They use academic and clinical experiences to provide diagnostic patient care services using ultrasound. This is used in the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. They also use ultrasound for related diagnostic procedures. Specifically, the sonographyer performs patient assessments, acquires and analyzes data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies, provides a summary of findings to the physician to aid in patient diagnosis and management and use in independent judgment and systematic problem solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information to optimize patient care. The technologist assists ultrasound-guided procedures.

 

Experience/Education Requirements:

Graduate of accredited diagnostic sonography program or successful completion of 9 months in an accredited program as indicated in a statement from the last clinical site and program director and expected to graduate within 6 monthsExperience in medical imaging technology demonstrating competency to successfully complete ultrasonographic procedures and maintain additional education in ultrasonic anatomy preferred.

License or Certification Requirements:

Registry eligible by successful completion of Physics registry or (S)ARRT or ARDMS registered. Registry applicants and employees must be (S)ARRT or ARDMS registered within 18 months of hire date.Successful completion of one other registry (AB, AE, BR, FE, MSK, NE, OB, PE, PS, PVI, or VT) within 18 months of hire date.

 

Responsibilities:

Applies principles of ultrasonography to minimize risk to patient, self, and others.Assists Radiologist and licensed physician with interventional procedures.Assumes responsibility for assigned work area and reports equipment malfunction.Provides input for equipment purchase and supply decisions.Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.Attends monthly department meetings.Available on an 'On Call' basis for emergency procedures.Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure.Verifies informed consent for and assists Radiologist with interventional procedures.Evaluates images and data for technical quality, manipulates display parameters and provides hard copy record of procedure.Evaluates images for technical quality.Initiates basic life support action when necessary.Maintains storage of digitized images as appropriate.Assists in maintaining records.May be responsible for control of inventory and purchase of supplies for assigned area.May be responsible for specific quality control duties in department.Participates in department's quality assessment and improvement plan.Practices aseptic technique when necessary.Prepares patient and equipment for procedure to best demonstrate the anatomic area of interest.Immobilizes patients as required for appropriate examination.Exercises precautions in patient application.Proper handling of specimens & cidex QCProvides practical instructions and participates in teaching program for students and healthcare professionals.Provides patient education.Selects and operates ultrasound equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results.Verifies informed consent.Transcribe ordersAssist in scheduling patients.Cidex:  Wears proper equipment when handling, completes QC and logs, cleans every 2 weeks, changes water daily.

Smell: Electrical/fire safety.
Hearing: Needed for obtaining patient education and understanding of procedure and history information gathering.
Touch: Needed for operating computer equipment, key boarding of entry and/or other functions for communication of information necessary for patient care.
