Vocational Field Counselor

Salary: $40,000 to $45,000

Position Summary

The Vocational Field Counselor provides supportive counseling and advocacy to client workers with disabilities employed by Fedcap's Janitorial and Office Services contracts. Field Counselor meets with client workers at worksites throughout Manhattan, 5 boroughs, and New Jersey and boroughs to assist with learning job and appropriate work behaviors to maintain employment. Communicate with the site supervisor to discuss workers' performance, problems, issues, and how to resolve these matters. Ensures required documentation of severe disability determination is completed and up to date and in accordance with SourceAmerica/New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) standards.

Essential Functions:

Provides supportive vocational counseling and advocacy to client workers at Fedcap work sites. Uses motivational interviewing and/or other established brief interventions to address client concerns and work behaviors. Provides transitional and post-employment support to ensure retention of client workers who become employed in the private sector. Reviews corrective action and disciplinary action notices on client workers to determine appropriate counseling interventions. Ensures that required documentation of severe disability determination is up to date and in accordance with SourceAmerica/New York State Industries for the Disabled (NYSID) standards. Completes annual disability review and requests new documentation as required. Consult with site supervisors and managers to gather information on client workers' functional limitations, performance, and potential problems. Consults with client workers' supervisors on disciplinary actions up to and including termination. Attends meetings with Fedcap Building Services and Office Services staff, ensuring customer satisfaction with employees placed into SourceAmerica/NYSID contract. Makes referrals to outside providers for clients with needs beyond the scope of those provided by the Vocational Field Counselor. Maintains case notes and written summaries of interventions and ongoing supports provided to client worker, reflecting every face-to-face interaction and any significant contact via phone, VP, or with collaterals (including family members). Serves as a consultant to clients' supervisors for accommodations, performance, behavior, quality of work, and problems on the job. Performs other related duties as assigned by management or supervision. Maintains professional boundaries in all work with Agency clients.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of and ability to follow agency policies & department procedures. Knowledge of a variety of disabilities. Understanding of employment-related issues. Knowledge of community resources. Knowledge of required SourceAmerica/NYSID and other relevant government contract standards and requirements. Excellent organizational, documentation, and recordkeeping skills. Ability to work independently and take initiative when appropriate. Ability to resolve problems within the scope of responsibilities. Ability to be flexible, adapt to changing situations, meet deadlines, and work under pressure. Make presentations to individuals and groups. Knowledge of rules of confidentiality. Ability to travel independently to Fedcap work sites. Excellent oral and written communication skills -- able to interface with all levels of personnel. Knowledge of and ability to use a computer, the internet, and software, including Microsoft Word.

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Social Service Field

Experience: Three (3) years of experience in counseling in a Vocational Rehabilitation setting.
