The vacancy will be filled as either a I, II or III depending on qualifications. The ideal candidates for Wastewater Maintenance Worker I/II/III will possess the following: + Possession of an appropriate, valid Class B driver's license + Experience performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City sewers and storm drains + Experience operating a variety of hand and small power tools, and maintenance equipment such as a combination truck, dump truck, pick-up truck, TV camera equipment, front-end loader, backhoe, skid steer, tractors and jack hammer. + Experience with public contact, customer service, and good verbal communications. Wastewater Maintenance Worker I – This is the entry level class in the Wastewater Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Wastewater Maintenance Worker II by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Assignments are generally limited in scope, contain fairly routine tasks, and are performed within a procedural framework established by higher-level employees. Wastewater Maintenance Worker II – This is the journey level class in the Wastewater Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class are distinguished from the Wastewater Maintenance Worker I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Wastewater Maintenance Worker III – This is the advanced journey level classification in the Wastewater Maintenance Worker series. Positions in this class are distinguished from other levels in the series by the performance of specialized or skilled maintenance, repair and construction duties. Employees are typically assigned significant responsibilities above the journey level and often exercise independent judgment in the performance of all duties. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned areas of responsibility. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed. Positions at the II level may be filled by advancement from the I level requiring at least one year experience performing duties comparable to those of a Wastewater Maintenance Worker I and successful performance. Positions at the III level may be filled by advancement from the II level requiring at least two years of increasingly responsible maintenance experience performing duties comparable to those of a Wastewater Maintenance Worker II and successful performance. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience that allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the corresponding II and III levels. Key Responsibilities The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. + Perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City sewers and storm drains. + Operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment and hand and small power tools including combination truck, dump truck, pick-up truck, front-end loader, backhoe, skid steer, tractors, jack hammer; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment. + Set up traffic control when working in high traffic areas of the City; install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites. + Break up paved surfaces; set forms; mix, pour, spread and finish concrete. + Inspect ditches and drainage areas for vegetation; remove vegetation using hand and power tools. + Operate a combination truck, TV camera equipment, and other equipment in the inspection, maintenance and construction of storm drains and sewer lines; perform confined space entry duties as required. + Install, repair and maintain sewer lines and laterals; locate and repair breaks in sewer mainlines; review maps for manhole location; repair or replace manholes as needed. + Read and interpret maps of underground drainage systems. + Locate and mark underground utilities. + Perform storm drain and flood channel maintenance duties; clean storm drains; clear debris from catch basins, storm drains and flood channels; build forms and prepare grades; mix, pour, spread, and finish concrete. + Performs work in confined spaces; performs necessary precautions prior to entering confined spaces with hazardous atmospheres, use air quality monitors and ventilators. + Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed. + Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel; assist with daily supervision of personnel and completion of assigned duties. + As assigned, lead a small group of workers on an assigned project; insure that safe procedures are followed; provide direction to resolve unanticipated problems in the absence of the supervisor. + Assist in maintenance projects outside of regularly assigned area including building and parks maintenance tasks as necessary. + Provide courteous customer service; responds to questions and inquiries from the general public; responds to customer problems or complaints. + Respond to emergency call-outs including street, sewer, storm drain or other public works maintenance work as required. + Serve on standby duty on a rotating basis (usually 6 to 12 months after hire). + Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and contribute to a cooperative team effort. + Perform related duties as required. ~ For detailed information on the position, please see the job description on the City's website at www.cityoflamesa.us ~ Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Wastewater Maintenance Worker I/II/III Education/Training : Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Wastewater Maintenance Worker I Experience : At least one year of maintenance and repair experience is desirable. License or Certificate : Possession of valid Class C driver’s license at time of appointment and required to obtain a Class B driver’s license within first six months of employment. Wastewater Maintenance Worker II Education/Training : Completion of progression criteria established by Department. Experience : At least one year of experience performing duties comparable to those of a Wastewater Maintenance Worker I. License or Certificate : Possession of valid Class B driver’s license. Wastewater Maintenance Worker III Experience : At least two years of increasingly responsible maintenance experience in assigned program area. License or Certificate : Possession of a Class B driver’s license with tank and air brakes endorsements. Special Requirements (I/II/III) : These positions require you to serve on a seven-day, 24-hour stand-by duty on a rotational basis. While serving in this capacity, you will be required to remain within cell phone contact and respond to emergency call-backs, as necessary. Employees in these positions are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing as required by the Department of Transportation.
