Wildlife/Environmental Specialist

The Wildlife/Environmental Specialist performs duties and tasks associated with wildlife management on a 6,000+ acre property. The technician will also support field monitoring of groundwater and surface water located at the FPL Turkey Point Nuclear Plant. Position is expected to require 40 hours a week (Monday-Thursday) with potential for OT during busy seasons.

Successful applicant will be required to submit to background checks, psychological testing and drug testing associated with obtaining a badge for nuclear plant access.

 

Scope of Work and Duties Specific to Environmental Specialist

 

Support the onsite Sr. Environmental Specialist with invasive species trapping and processing; support wildlife calls associated with venomous/non-venomous snakes, crocodilians, , birds and other South Florida wildlife. Support the crocodile program which includes: night captures and surveys, daytime surveys, habitat enhancement, data entry and analysis Regularly operate and maintain off-road vehicles and various other aquatic vessels (kayaks, airboats, canoes, and small boats) Track permit requirements and submittals associated with the wildlife program Work as part of a monitoring crew in the field and work directly with the current Field Team Lead, Program Environmental Specialist, and Program Project Manager to meet compliance requirements. Support groundwater and surface water field monitoring in accordance with county, state, and federal guidelines Collect water quality samples from groundwater wells and surface water stations Support in-field activities and maintenance duties for compliance with the environmental monitoring program including: Manual data downloads from automated probes Troubleshooting of sampling and automated equipment Packing and shipping samples following regulatory guidelines and quality assurance standards Detailed record keeping and data management of collected data (field sample sheets, logbooks, COCs, lab reports) Reconnaissance of problem areas, escort vendors to check equipment as needed Assist with data mining, retrieval, and minor database management related to various projects Support record keeping and generation of order requests for any materials related to field and lab needs Support Office Manager as needed General housekeeping Paperwork filing, scanning and organization Vehicle maintenance (trucks, 4x4 vehicles)

 

Skillset Required:

Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, more specifically Access, Excel and Word functions is required

Must be able to work in the field 8-10 hour days; Experience working in extreme weather conditions including high humidity and hot temperatures for long hours

Valid Driver’s License

Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs.

 

Preferred:

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Animal Husbandry, Ecology or related field

Environmental field technician or wildlife handling experience

Experience operating airboats and/or marine boats (Boating License and Training Required)

Experience with monitoring groundwater and surface water using multiple sampling techniques and applications

On the job training (OJT) will be provided for all positions.

 

Schedule: Monday through Thursday, 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM
